Queensland Shines at BioAsia 2024 with TIQ Spearheading Collaboration in Life Sciences with Indian Companies

India, 28th February 2024Trade and Investment Queensland (TIQ), the dedicated business agency of the Government of Queensland is pleased to announce the tremendous response received during its participation as the global sponsor for BioAsia 2024. The event served as a catalyst for initiating discussions and exploring potential partnerships with other companies within the life sciences industry and healthcare sector.

Queensland’s participation in BioAsia 2024 proved to be a resounding success, further solidifying the state’s commitment to fostering global innovation through collaboration. Led by TIQ, a delegation of 8 Queensland researchers and companies immersed themselves in the dynamic atmosphere of the event, forging fruitful collaborations with Indian and global counterparts. The Queensland delegates showcased the state’s innovative prowess and dedication to advancing R&D, AI, and data-driven solutions during their interactions with industry leaders and experts. This successful collaboration underscores Queensland’s position as a leader in R&D and highlights the strategic importance of partnerships with India and other global players in driving economic growth and innovation.

Mr. Abhinav Bhatia, Senior Trade & Investment Commissioner – South Asia, Trade and Investment Queensland, remarked, “Our participation at BioAsia 2024 reflects Queensland’s dedication to driving innovation and fostering global partnerships through joint research, phase I clinical trials, joint drug discovery initiatives. These were the strands discussed during meeting between Queensland and Indian leaders in life-sciences.”

The Queensland delegation included Professor Alan Rowan, Director of the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology at the University of Queensland (UQ) renowned for his pioneering research in Advanced Nano-Structured Materials, Precision Nanomedicine, and Biomanufacturing. Joining him are Tamanna Monem, Head of Growth & Partnerships, Directorate, at The Queensland Institute of Medical Research (QIMR), Berghofer, renowned for her strategic vision and expertise in driving sustainable growth initiatives and garnering investments from key sectors like healthcare, MedTech and defence; Professor Prasad Yarlagadda, Dean of Engineering at the University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ), an award-winning engineer recognized for his exceptional contributions to engineering and advanced manufacturing and who has received over $18 million in funding for his research; Prof Eliza Whiteside, Head (Research) at UniSQ who has won multiple awards for research in fields like molecular biomarkers, cancer biology, survivorship, and medical materials and technologies; and Dr. Anand Gautam, who is the founder of G2OME CONSULTING GROUP is a Life Science Queensland Ambassador, and is an Adjunct Professor at The Institute for Molecular Biosciences, University of Queensland.

Alongside the delegates leading Queensland companies like Microbio which has developed InfectID – a novel molecular diagnostic technology, Southern RNA which specialises in the production of nucleic acid products, Aegros an Australian technology leader in the therapeutic plasma market and Clinials which is a next generation Clinical research platform helping Global Life Science pioneers showcased their groundbreaking work across the entire spectrum of life sciences innovation, from R&D and clinical trials to cutting-edge data & AI applications. The participation of the delegation and the companies showcased their innovative contributions across the life sciences spectrum, laying the groundwork for future collaborations and partnerships.

19th Edition of BioAsia to focus on Future Readiness of the Life-Sciences Industry; 2-Day event to kick-start on February 24th

19th edition  of the Asia’s largest life-sciences and Health Tech forum BioAsia, the annual flagship event of Government of Telangana will be held during February 24th and 25th, 2022 in a virtual format. The theme of this year’s edition is ‘Future Ready’ and would focus on exploring industry’s current position and future potential, new approaches and capabilities required to be ready as the life sciences industry develops its future growth strategy. The future growth will be driven by shift from “volume focus” to “volume + value focus”. The industry needs to continue building on its strength and at the same time make a giant leap towards innovation. New capabilities need to be introduced across the business functions to bring efficiencies and to help industry move up the value chain.

The event will bring together leaders from the industry, research, innovation and governments from more than 70 countries to address the wide-ranging needs of the healthcare system. The conference will provide a unique opportunity to Pharma and Biotech companies, CROs, CMOs, CDMOs, Biotech start-ups, Academic Institutions, Scientists and Researchers, Policy Makers, and Regulatory Experts across the globe to assess industry’s current position and deliberate on the imperatives for future growth and other insightful topics related to the life sciences industry.

The two-day event will witness a wide array of panels focussing on the Future of the Life-Sciences amid the ongoing pandemic and the ways the industry must be focussing on to combat any future pandemics. Explaining the significance of the global conclave, Mr. Jayesh Ranjan, IAS, Principal Secretary, the Industries & Commerce (I&C) and Information Technology (IT), Government of Telangana said, “BioAsia is an excellent global forum for biotechnology, pharma and healthcare industries, academia and start-ups to showcase their innovations and network for better connections. Over the years, it has been instrumental in promoting India and Telangana as key enablers in the global life sciences and allied sectors. Over the last 18 years, BioAsia convention has seen over 270 Lols, Bilateral co-operation agreements & MoUs getting signed along with trade & investment to an extent of USD 2.6 billion so far.”

The first virtual edition held last year was extremely successful and impactful in continuing the dialogue in these unprecedented times. The  2021 event witnessed around 31,450 participants representing 72 countries with 60 high-profile speakers. Hyderabad: Asia’s largest Life Sciences and Biotechnology convention –BioAsia 2021 kick-started today in the presence of advocates from Life Sciences, Biotechnology, Pharma and Healthcare industries in India and abroad. The 18th edition of the global forum is being held on 22nd and 23rd February and was inaugurated by Mr KT Rama Rao, Hon’ble Minister for Industries and Commerce & IT, Government of Telangana. With the theme of ‘Moving The Needle’, the annual flagship event of the Government of Telangana, BioAsia, is focusing on COVID-19, Global Health, Pharma and MedTech.

While inaugurating the summit, Mr. K.T. Rama Rao, Minister for Industries and Commerce & IT, Government of Telangana said, “BioAsia 2021 marks the 18th edition of this prestigious annual flagship event and I’m extremely pleased that we have continued to hold this tradition by conducting the event amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. With the world still grappling over this and getting used to the ‘New Normal’, I would like to use this occasion once again to thank all the front-line workers including health care and public services, and the Scientists, among others who worked tirelessly during these unprecedented times amongst social and personal challenges. I take pride in saying that Hyderabad rose to the occasion and made an impact for the world to witness. During the inaugural ceremony, along with the Minister, also present in the occasion were Mr. Jayesh Ranjan, IAS, Principal Secretary, Industries & Commerce Dept, Govt of Telangana, Mr. E.V Narasimha Reddy, Chairman & Managing Director , TSIIC, Mr. Shakti Nagappan, Director of Telangana Life-sciences & CEO, BioAsia, Mr. Satish Reddy, Chairman, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, and Mr. Naveen Gullapalli, Global Head, Novartis Business Services Innovation and Dr. Krishna Ella, Chairman and Managing Director, Bharat Biotech. The organizing committee of BioAsia has bestowed the prestigious Genome Valley Excellence Award 2021 to Bharat BioTech for its breakthrough, pioneering research, development and commercialization of vaccines including COVAXIN™ (COVID-19 Vaccine), Rabies vaccine, Japanese Encephalitis vaccine, Polio vaccine and Typhoid Conjugate vaccines, among many others that have helped save billions of lives globally. The award was personally received by Dr. Krishna Ella and Dr. Suchitra Ella.

During the inaugural session, an MoU was signed between the Govt. of Telangana and Cytiva, a global life-science leader to establish Biopharma Scale up facility that will be established in Genome Valley to provide professional training, technology evaluation, consultancy services, infrastructure support for process development, and the flexibility to scale up.

The inaugural session was followed by an insightful keynote address by Mr. Peter Marks, Director, Centre for Biologics Evaluation and Research, FDA. The first panel discussion of the day on the topic of Virtually Connected Healthcare was focussed on the prospects of telemedicine and Digi tools improving accessibility to healthcare with active participation from leaders in the space including Mr. Arnaud Bernaert, Head of Global Health and Healthcare, World Economic Forum, Ms. Carmen (C.F.M.) van Vilsteren, Chair Top Sector Life Sciences & Health, Health Holland, Ms. Sangita Reddy, Joint MD, Apollo Hospitals, , Ms. Debjani Ghosh, President, NASSCOM, Mr. Ashutosh Raghuvanshi, MD & CEO, Fortis Healthcare Limited and Mr. KaivaanMovdawalla, Partner, Healthcare, EY India. The session was moderated by Ms. Rhythma Kaul, Health Editor, Hindustan Times.

The second panel discussion – Immunizing the World was focused on India’s potential and key steps/actions to be taken to become the future global innovative vaccines provider. The panel comprised of global leaders including Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, Chief Scientist, World Health Organization, Dr. Balram Bhargava, Secretary to Government of India, Department of Health Research, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare & Director-General, Indian Council of Medical Research, Dr. Robin Nandy, Principal Advisor & Chief of Immunizations, UNICEF, Dr. Jerome H. Kim, Director General, International Vaccine Institute (IVI), South Korea, Dr. Krishna Ella, Chairman & Managing Director, Bharat Biotech International Limited and Ms. Mahima Datla, Managing Director, Biological E.

The final panel for Day 1 on Hits/Misses and hidden pandemic, sparked an interesting discussion on learning from the pandemic to create a robust healthcare system. Dr. VK Paul, Member (Health), Niti Aayog, Government of India, Dr.Renu Swarup, Secretary to Government of India, Department of Biotechnology, Dr. Poonam Khetrapal Singh, Regional Director for South-East Asia, World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. V.G. Somani, Drugs Controller General (India), Central Drugs Standard Control Organization, Dr. Richard Hatchett, Chief Executive Officer, CEPI, Dr. Peter Piot, Director, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and Dr. Naresh Trehan, Chairman and Managing Director, Medanta Hospital constituted the panel.
