Large Industries celebrates Energy Conservation Week across India under “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav”

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) organised a webinar for Designated Consumers under the PAT scheme during the ongoing “National Energy Conservation Week: 8th–14th December 2021”, under “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav”. The Designated Consumers belonged to energy-intensive sectors such as Cement, Iron & Steel, Textile, Pulp & Paper, Refinery, fertilizers, Chlor-Alkali, Thermal Power Plants, and Aluminium.

On this occasion, while delivering the keynote, the Director-General, BEE congratulated the Designated Consumers for celebrating the spirit of Azadi and Amrit Utsav by organizing various activities involving awareness, outreach and commitments towards inculcating values of energy conservation and engaging in energy efficiency activities.

The webinar was conducted to interact with DCs so as to share experiences of the celebration of the week and highlight their broad course of an action plan to contribute to the recent announcements by the Hon’ble Prime Minister at COP 26, Glasgow, UK.

During the webinar, the DCs under the leadership of the Plant Head/Energy Managers highlighted the activities performed during National Energy Conservation Week. The celebration of National Energy Conservation Week included the following main activates: Painting Competition/Essay Writing, Quiz/Competition/Debates, Vriksha Ropan (Tree Plantations), Road Shows on energy conservation in the nearby areas. The DCs of all 9 sectors conducted many activities for the employees and other staff to empower them, such as energy walks, online training, tree plantations, and many more where they used social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, as well as internal communications. All the Designated Consumers took part in mass awareness campaigns and on this journey. The webinar aimed to promote awareness amongst its personnel and the civil society around them. Over 40 DCs belonging to said sectors shared their experiences and list of activities, and it was informed that through their activities more than 1.5 Lakh individuals including employees, their families, school children, and civil society surrounding such DCs.

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) organized a virtual workshop on Technology Transfer for decarbonization of Industry on December 9, 2021, during “National Energy Conservation Week: 8th–14th December 2021”, marked as Iconic Week under “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav”. The opening remarks were given by theDirector General of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), followed by the commencement of the workshop in various stages.

DG, BEE said that on the occasion of National Energy Conservation Week, today’s dedication towards the decarbonization of industry is very important. There are definitely a lot of challenges, but the efforts put into this and the transformation will not go unnoticed.

The speaker for the outcome of the first consultation meeting on “Green Public Procurement (GPP) for the Decarbonisation of Industry” was the Manager of Partnerships, Clean Energy Ministerial. It was also acknowledged that cement manufacturers should adopt “cleaner, more efficient, greener technologies for cement production.” Participants also identified a few voluntary actions on GPP at the state (sub-national level) and large-scale private sector level.

Head of the Secretariat Leadership Group for Industry Transitions, Stockholm Environment Institute spoke about the best available technology options for decarbonization of the steel and cement sectors. Member from Climate and Energy Fund, Austria, deliberated on the Net Zero Industry Mission of Mission Innovation and its implications for the industry. Sr. Director, TERI highlighted the best available technology options for decarbonization of the steel and cement sectors.

The breakout groups on Steel and Cement discussed the main barriers to the application of the best available technologies within India; main opportunities for applying the best available technologies within India; the role of Green Hydrogen in the decarbonization of cement and steel industry; the role of material circularity in energy efficiency in Steel and Cement sectors; incentivizing the private sector to invest in technology innovation that would support the decarbonizing of steel and cement industries; and the main gaps constraining investments in new technologies.

The workshop zoomed into specific technology transfer options for the decarbonization of the steel and cement sectors in India. The workshop also facilitated discussions on the state-of-the-art technologies and know-how, as well as opportunities for deployment within India.

Launch of ‘Certification Course on Home Energy Audit’ Initiative by BEE, under the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) organized a virtual meeting to launch “Certification Course on Home Energy Audit (HEA)” on December 8, 2021, during “National Energy Conservation Week: 8th–14th December 2021”, marked as Iconic Week under “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav”. The welcome address and program brief were presented by Shri R. K. Rai, Secretary, Bureau of Energy Efficiency, and Shri Abhishek Sharma, Joint Director, Bureau of Energy Efficiency, followed by an inaugural address by ShriAbhayBakre, Director General, Bureau of Energy Efficiency.

Dr. R. Harikumar, Director, Energy Management Centre, Kerala, gave a presentation on “Overview & Way Forward for Certification Course on Home Energy Audit”. The launch event was also attended by Vice-Chancellors, Chairpersons, Managing Directors, faculties, and students from various Engineering / Diploma colleges and officials of all State Designated Agencies (SDAs) across the country. More than 300 students from 50 colleges/institutes across the country participated in the webinar.

A Home Energy Audit (HEA) enables appropriate accounting, quantification, verification, monitoring, and analysis of energy use of various energy-consuming equipment and appliances in a house and the submission of a technical report with feasible solutions and recommendations for improving energy efficiency, with a cost-benefit analysis and action plan to reduce energy consumption. This would ultimately lead to a reduction in energy bills and the carbon footprint of the consumer.

ShriAbhayBakre during his address emphasized, “The certification program will create awareness on importance and benefits of energy audit and energy efficiency and conservation among students from engineering/diploma colleges. This will certainly increase the employability of youth in the domain of energy efficiency, climate change mitigation, and sustainability.”

The Certification Course would enable:

● Creation of a pool of professionals to perform home energy audits based on the needs of the consumer (s);

● Domestic consumers to get Home Energy Audit carried out through respective SDA Certified Home Energy Auditor(s);

● Dissemination of information and raising awareness among engineering/diploma/ITI students, energy professionals, and industry partners about the importance and benefits of energy auditing, energy efficiency, and conservation.

Energy Management Centre, Kerala has been identified as Mentor SDA for the initiative. Other 11 SDAs namely Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Daman & Diu, Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Punjab, Sikkim, and Telangana have expressed their willingness to run the Certification Course on HEA for respective stakeholders in their states. On successful completion of the certification course, SDA will offer the certificate to qualifying students/personnel.
