Kargil, October 17, 2025 : A significant Mass Pledge Taking and Awareness Programme was held at the Government Degree College (GDC) in Kargil as a preparatory event marking the upcoming fifth anniversary of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, a nationwide campaign focused on eradicating drug abuse and promoting a drug-free society.
Organized by the Drug De-Addiction Centre (DDAC) Kargil under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, in collaboration with the Social & Tribal Welfare Department and the Education Department, the event brought together college students, faculty, and community leaders committed to spreading awareness about the dangers of drug addiction.
The gathering was honored by the presence of prominent dignitaries including Sheikh Bashir Shakiri, member of IKMT, Sheikh Mahboob Vijdani, Imtiyaz Hussain (Manager, DDAC Kargil), Principal Diskit Angmo, along with faculty members and students. The event commenced with a warm welcome extended by the GDC Kargil faculty.
Pledge Against Drug Abuse and Awareness Session
Imtiyaz Hussain led the students and staff in taking a solemn pledge to resist drug abuse. He followed this with an insightful talk detailing the functions and facilities of the District Drug De-Addiction and Rehabilitation Centre in Kargil. He elaborated on various types of drugs, their detrimental impacts on health, families, and society, stressing the crucial role of early prevention in combating addiction.
Messages of Guidance and Motivation
Addressing the youth, Sheikh Bashir Shakiri emphasized adolescence and young adulthood as pivotal stages where individuals are most vulnerable to curiosity and experimentation. He urged the students to make wise choices, seek proper guidance, and avoid substances that could jeopardize their futures. He highlighted the importance of a positive environment, strong peer groups, dedication, and hard work as pillars of a successful and addiction-free life.
Sheikh Mahboob Vijdani echoed these sentiments, underscoring that peer pressure, stress, and unhealthy social circles are often the root causes of substance abuse. He encouraged students to foster social responsibility and actively engage in community welfare.
Principal Diskit Angmo also addressed the students, reminding them that education is key to understanding right from wrong and plays a vital role in building an addiction-free nation.

Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan (NMBA), launched by the Government of India in 2020, is a nationwide campaign dedicated to creating awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and fostering a drug-free society. The initiative involves collaboration between various government ministries, local authorities, educational institutions, and community organizations to strengthen prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation efforts.
The campaign aims to empower youth and communities through education, outreach programs, and strict enforcement of anti-drug laws. It is celebrated annually to renew commitment towards combating substance abuse and to promote a healthy, productive society.
