Cricketer Ajinkya Rahane Mentors Students from Salaam Bombay Foundation’s Fitness Program

Mumbai, August 21st, 2023: Salaam Bombay Foundation’s (SBF) Sports Academy organised a mentoring session with Indian cricketer Ajinkya Rahane for its ‘Fitness Monitors’ adolescent students studying in municipal or government-aided schools, who are trained under the Academy’s Fitness Program and handpicked for their long term interest in fitness. The goal of the event was to inspire adolescents to adopt a lifestyle of fitness while becoming change agents within their communities. As part of the session, the students had the opportunity to interact with Mr. Rahane where they learned about his journey of fitness on his way to becoming one of India’s top cricketers. SBF also organised for Mr. Rahane and the students to engage in fun fitness activities which combined aspects of cricket, fitness, and motor skill development.

SBF’s 100-hour-2-year Fitness Program has been designed to help underprivileged adolescents maintain fitness levels while increasing their participation in various sports. The program also provides a platform for adolescents to explore career opportunities in fitness and other areas within the sports industry. SBF has gone one step ahead with the “Fitizens Initiative” where enthusiastic students showcasing a motivation to make an impact on their communities with a potential to pursue a career in sports and fitness are selected as ‘Fitness Monitors’. Mohammedan Sporting Fans win the IFA Shield U.K. in their maiden appearance

The entire Bengali diaspora in and around London seems to have buzzed at Arbour Park, Home Slough Town Football Club. The reason is the IFA Shield U.K. for Men, Women and Kids segments.

After a well fought tournament Mohammedan Sporting Fans, playing for the first time , emerged as the winner of the SNU IFA Shield U.K. for Men beating a fancied Indian High Commission team which had former India international Jules Alberto playing for them, 2-0. The women’s section saw a very exciting round of penalty shoot out where Mohun Bagan won the IIHM IFA Shield U.K. for Women. The kids’ shield was won by East Bengal.

All the players of the tournament signed a congratulatory card for the SAFF Cup winning India Team to the Indian Deputy High Commissioner. The event was attended by representatives of the British Royal Army and Royal Air Force, who handed over the winning trophies along with the Indian Deputy High Commissioner Mr Sujit Ghosh. and representatives of the lead sponsor GBS.

There was a festive atmosphere throughout the day with several food stalls selling Bengali delicacies and sweets. IFA Shield U.K. 2023 – Football Tournament by Heritage Bengal Global for The Indian Bengali diaspora

The Indian Bengali diaspora in UK is always seen donning the jerseys of their favorite club East Bengal or Mohun Bagan every summer since the past 6 years (excluding the COVID year of 2020). The excitement is building up for 9th July, this year at Arbour Park, Slough, to play in a day long fans’ football tournament called IFA Shield UK, where IFA stands for Indian Fans Alliance, which is accredited by the FA of England!

Every year it turns out to be a fun filled football and food day with ilish and chingri (prawn) in the food menu. This year is no exception. But with the support and initiative of Mohammedan Sporting Club’s football Secretary Dipendu Biswas, the club fans are making their maiden entry into the tournament. The icing on the cake for this year is the Indian High Commission sending a team led by the Deputy High Commissioner Sujit Ghosh himself. The team looks quite interesting with former India International Jules Alberto and the youngest councillor of Harrow Council Mathew Goodwin Freeman in their lineup!

The tournament is played in men, women and kids segments with the women folk doing a penalty shootout only. But the fun is no less there.

For the organisers Heritage Bengal Global’s Rajib Saha, Sourav Paul, Ramita Ghosh, Sudipto Bhowmik this year is a new challenge having to accommodate the highest number of teams making it the biggest IFA Shield UK till date. Pointers Business Forum (PBF) has been an integral part of this tournament since the last two years, led by its Chairman Suborno Bose of IIHM, Secretary Sanjay Guha of Acquist Realty based in Mumbai, Debashis Ghosh of Kolkata and Shoumo Chowdhury of Harrow and are working on the sponsorship and international networking side, making it a truly global initiative.
