Mr. Vineet Agarwal, MD at Transport Corporation of India
‘‘The much-awaited announcement by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India around National Logistics Policy, will herald a paradigm shift in the logistics sector. Push toward seamless multimodal transportation and modern connectivity will be a game changer as it will shift the transportation stress from just roads to other modes as well. It will help us drive the ESG goals and focus on a better cost structure. The paperless supply chain initiative, strengthened cooperative federalism, ease of Logistics services portal (e-log), and standardization of the warehousing sector will help India become one of the top 25 Logistics performers in the world. The Unified Logistics Interface Platform (ULIP) tenant of the NLP will enhance visibility for customers and enable logistics companies like us to adopt digitization at a much larger scale. Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya will act as a human resource for the drivers and other such training programs will be provided to the workforce.
NLP is an encouragement for all the stakeholders in the Supply Chain segment & will be one of the key pillars for India to become a USD 5 trillion economy. It will surely provide the ‘Cheetah Speed’ to the logistics industry and make India a global logistics hub.”

‘‘*1) The effects of New Policy; how will the policy facilitate seamless movement of goods across the country*
India for its peninsular shape has largely been dependent on road and rail transportation and both these modes are far less efficient than waterways transportation. Ironically between road and rail transportation, the share of road transportation is about 60% – 65%. India moves goods on the most expensive mode of transportation.
Without going into the reasons for the high share of road transportation, it is paramount that we explore the inherent benefits of multimodal transportation. NLP has multimodal as its core focus area.
*2) How will it benefit the focus areas (process re-engineering, digitization, multi-modal transport, etc.) in the policy*
With the Introduction of e waybill, there has been a huge reduction of paperwork required for transportation and ease of movement across the country. This policy is a step to make information flow seamless across key stakeholders and regulators, making logistics efficient by multi-modal transportation and increasing the capability of a strong supply chain with a robust infrastructure.
*3) Will it reduce the cost of logistics and promote logistics infrastructure across the country?*
Key components of cost reduction in logistics are – reducing over inventory, reducing product obsolescence, reducing wastage of perishable products, and movement of goods over less efficient modes of transportation. An efficient cost-effective modes of transportation would certainly reduce the cost of logistics. An efficient cost-effective mode of transportation, without logistics infrastructure, is not enough for overall logistics cost to be optimum.
*4) long-term growth for Industry and support of Indian manufacturing*
For making Indian products competitive not just in India but globally, we need strong supply chains. It is the core of a strong manufacturing base.
*5) Does the policy fulfill expectations that were pre-set before the announcement?*
While the policy has covered most of the focus area, the key challenges of implementation would be coordination between different ministries, alignment of key stakeholders for the larger picture, and pace of infrastructure development and implementation.
– The impact of the policy
– Did the policy meet expectations of the logistics industry?
The policy is comprehensive and we look forward to strong implementation of it.
*- Does the Policy cover all important sectors of the supply chain that require to be revised or improvement?*
Welcome Cheetahs to India; there are a lot of similarities between the Cheetah and NLP. Cheetah is the fastest mammal and they are able to run fast as they have large lungs that pumps blood when the animal is running. Cheetahs have strong tail that helps it to change direction during hunting.
NPL attempts to have a strong infrastructure ( the heart of logistics) and tech infrastructure to support a fast-growing manufacturing economy. NPL has its focus on tactical multimodal implementation ( the tail of cheetah) that is flexible, cost-efficient, and agile.”

”NLP aims at reducing the logistics cost from 13% to a single digit. Drones will soon contribute to agricultural logistics from the remotest regions of the Himalayas or remote islands their product will be made accessible to the Metro region of India. ULIP, ELOG, Gati Shakti, and many more initiatives will try to deliver a cheetah speed to the logistics of India. NLP gives the smallest of people in the ecosystem to get access to information that was available to key stakeholders only.85% of owners own less than 10 trucks and their empty trucks can pick up the goods from the best place which will yield them a higher return. NLP also helps the last mile to be more efficient and faster to fill up the gap of transporter where business can benefit in terms of time and cost. Currently, logistics is providing livelihood to more than 22 million people, with one of the initiatives aimed at upskilling and increasing employment opportunities. At the grassroots level, NLP also helps truck drivers to get a peaceful night. Along with the normal people in the ecosystem, it will also help the shramik class to get respect and dignity.”
