“Taj Madikeri Resort & Spa, Coorg Reinforces Its Sustainability Commitment Through Biodiversity Initiatives”

Bengaluru, Feb 17: Paathya, IHCL’s ESG+ framework, brings together long‑term priorities such as environmental stewardship, community development and responsible operations into a cohesive approach adopted across the portfolio. Taj Madikeri Resort & Spa, Coorg is a reflection of this vision on the ground.

Developed as a rare eco-hotspot within a 180‑acre rainforest landscape, Taj Madikeri Resort & Spa, was built over seven years without cutting a single tree and utilises only 30 acres for development. Construction practices focused on reducing environmental impact. Compressed stabilised earth blocks were produced on‑site from displaced soil and sun‑dried instead of baked, lowering emissions and achieving a near‑zero construction footprint. The land’s natural contours were retained, with pathways created without levelling, and excavated soil repurposed to form a freshwater lake that now supports aquatic life, attracts migratory birds, and aids rainwater harvesting.

This ecological sensitivity has enabled a thriving biodiversity. The property supports 310 species of birds, 68 species of butterflies, 79 species of mammals, and 32 species of frogs. With an Air Quality Index consistently below 3 and a fully plastic‑free environment, the resort offers an experience rooted in environmental integrity. A distinctive feature is its Batracharium, established after identifying the species of frog within the property. Guided by the in‑house naturalist, it offers guests an accessible understanding of the region’s ecological richness. Complementing this is the Biodiversity Photography Club, which engages associates and guests in documenting and appreciating the resort’s natural heritage.

Guided forest walks led by in‑house naturalists, a Butterfly Park, honey cultivation with 32 active bee colonies, and pottery sessions using natural materials encourage deeper interaction with the landscape. A heritage conservatory at the resort highlights the Kodava culture, linking ecological preservation with local heritage.

Resource efficiency guides operations. Naturally ventilated public spaces reduce reliance on air‑conditioning, while natural lighting, LED usage, and low‑wattage outdoor illumination minimise energy consumption and protect nocturnal species. The resort treats and reuses all its wastewater for irrigation and flushing, and over the last two years, more than 84% of its electricity has been sourced from wind energy. Continuing its sustainability journey, the resort has recently transitioned to electric mobility across the estate. After extensive trials to adapt the vehicles to the steep terrain, petrol gypsys were replaced with Tata Punch EVs. These zero‑emission vehicles reduce noise and minimise disturbance to fauna. Safety enhancements including reinforced bars, non‑slip flooring, transparent rain covers, and weather‑resistant interiors, improve accessibility for all guests, particularly elderly visitors.

The resort’s community footprint is equally significant. Over 31% of its associates come from neighbouring villages, supporting livelihood creation and local skill development. Engagement with artisans and regional producers ensures that economic benefits extend to the wider community.

Recognised globally for its efforts, Taj Madikeri Resort & Spa is a proud recipient of the EarthCheck Gold Certification, reinforcing its commitment to responsible tourism and environmental stewardship.
