Sitharaman Pushes for Greater Canadian Investment in India

Toronto, Aug 27: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has called on Canadian businesses and institutional investors to explore fresh investment opportunities in India, highlighting the country’s stable policy environment, greater tax certainty and ongoing economic reforms.

Speaking at a high-level business roundtable in Toronto, Sitharaman engaged with senior executives from a wide range of industries, including clean technology, critical minerals, energy, infrastructure, automotive, aerospace, biotechnology, artificial intelligence and financial services.

The Finance Minister also held meetings with senior representatives of leading Canadian pension funds, including Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan (OTPP), OMERS and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB), seeking to deepen their long-term investment commitments in India.

During her meeting with OTPP President and CEO Jo Taylor, Sitharaman discussed opportunities to expand investments through partnerships and co-investment structures. Potential areas included power transmission, transport, urban infrastructure and renewable energy.

She also highlighted the GIFT International Financial Services Centre (GIFT-IFSC) as an avenue for international investors looking to access India’s growing financial services ecosystem.

With OMERS President and CEO Blake Hutcheson, Sitharaman discussed expanding the institution’s presence beyond its existing investments in infrastructure and real estate. Opportunities in renewable energy, logistics, transportation, urban infrastructure and transmission were among the areas discussed.

In her meeting with CPPIB President and CEO John Graham, Sitharaman discussed opportunities for institutional capital across roads, ports, renewable energy, transmission, urban infrastructure, digital infrastructure and data centres.

She also highlighted India’s expanding infrastructure monetisation pipeline and the government’s efforts to improve investor protection, regulatory transparency and predictability.

Sitharaman encouraged Canadian investors to look beyond their existing investments and explore emerging opportunities across sectors and regions as India continues to expand its infrastructure base and attract long-term global capital.

The discussions underline India’s broader push to strengthen economic ties with Canada and position the country as an attractive destination for long-term investment.
