The pain of the joints is one of the commonest ortho ailments which compels the patients to seek medical treatment. The other option is a joint replacement which has its complications and again is not a permanent solution. Pain portal injections are new discoveries in pain management, which involve injecting of safe local medications in very small quantities at various spots to produce long-lasting relief in orthopedic practice. This new technique is proving to be a boon for many orthopedic patients and is preventing other side effects besides prolonging the usage of natural joints.

The other latest development which is revolutionizing healthcare is Robotic treatment. The precision Robots brought in knee replacement surgery is ensuring accurate placement of prostheses enabling the replacements to last for a patient’s lifetime.

Robot eliminates human eyeballing errors and ensures an accurate placement that lasts longer, often the lifetime of the patient, adds Dr. Mithin Aachi.

The other phenomenon observed in the recent past is the rampant rise in post covid ortho-related ailments. Avascular Necrosis of the Femoral head, where the hip bone becomes dead due to cessation of blood supply to it, is one of the prime ailments being diagnosed among Covid recovered patients. This disease The treatment option available for such patients was hip replacement. The treatment modalities developed recently like using cartilage cell therapies and revascularisation of the hip, reversing the avascularity, and giving life to the hip without major surgery.

Of late we are seeing a lot of Covid recovered patients developing Avascular Necrosis of the Femoral head, the alarming part is this manifesting among the youth aged between 20 to 30 years. The cause for the rise in the disease is the usage of steroids while treating Covid. Though hip replacement continues to be the gold standard of care, but performing it at a young age can impact them for a lifetime. The new treatments enable postponing hip replacement. The modern techniques of cartilage cell therapies and revascularisation of the hip relieve patients of the trauma, says Dr. Somasekhar Reddy N.

The new pain portal injections are working in orthopedic pain pathologies and giving good midterm to long-term relief, says Dr. L Prakash, Director and Chief of Orthopaedics, Institute for Special Orthopaedics, Palakkad, Kerala.
