Oyo reports 8x rise in EBIDTA, losses narrow ahead of IPO

IPO-bound global travel-tech firm Oyo has reported eight times rise in adjusted EBITDA at Rs. 56 crore in its second quarter financial results. The EBIDTA was at Rs.7 crore in the first quarter.

The primary driver for the EBIDTA rise is a 23% monthly rise in monthly revenue per hotel, also called Gross Booking Value (GBV) per hotel per month, during Q2 to around Rs.4 lakh. The monthly increase in GBV per hotel is due to improved occupancy and higher average room rents as travel returns, the company said.

In an addendum submitted to SEBI, Ritesh Agarwal-led Oravel Stays Ltd, which runs the company under the Oyo brand, reported narrowed losses of Rs.333 crore during the July to September quarter, down from Rs.414 crore in the previous quarter.

Oyo filed its second addendum to update its Draft Red Herring Prospectus (DRHP) with the financial performance till the first half of FY2022-23.

The markets regulator had given Oyo the permission to submit updated financials before it examined and finally processed the company’s IPO application.

Oyo, which pushed its plans to go public to next year, facilitates hotels, homestays and lodging bookings.

The results come after Oyo’s valuation in the private market last month dipped to around $6.5 billion, following reports that suggested that its investor SoftBank Group Corp has slashed the valuation of Oyo Hotels on its books by more than 20%.

The Gurugram-based company aims to launch its initial public offering (IPO) in the first quarter of 2023 looking at a valuation of around $7-8 billion, down from its initial estimates of around $10 billion when it first filed the draft papers. During the second quarter of this fiscal year, Oyo has reduced its marketing, administrative and employee costs.

Employee expenses net of share-based payment expenses constituted the largest component on the cost side, at 18% of the revenues, followed by marketing expenses at 14% and general and admin expenses at 7% of the revenues for H1 FY23, the company said.

For H1 FY23, Oyo’s revenues increased by 24% year-on-year to Rs.2,905 crore while the adjusted EBITDA improved to Rs. 63 crore profit from a loss of Rs.280 crore in the first half of the previous financial year ending March 2022.

The unicorn hospitality chain’s GBV for the half year ended September 2022 increased by 68.7% year on year to Rs.3.48 lakh, revived after the Covid-19-led pandemic. The total GBV grew 33% to Rs. 5,028 crore in H1 2022-23.

However, the gross rentals for Oyo European homes business stayed stagnant showing just a 4% increase impacted by inflation.
Founded in 2013 by then-20-year-old Agarwal, Oyo is a leading new-age technology platform empowering the large global hospitality ecosystem.

The firm says it now focuses on four main regions: India, Malaysia, Indonesia and Europe, where it manages vacation homes and has cut down operations in markets it previously considered crucial, such as the US and China.

Besides SoftBank, Oyo’s other shareholders include Singapore’s Grab Holdings Inc., China’s HuaZhu Hotels and the family office of Sunil Munjal of India’s Hero Group.

NEW DELHI,  November 2022: Building on its commitment to accelerate India’s contribution to developing XR technologies, Meta is supporting the Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) with $1 million for the XR Open Source (XROS) fellowship program. The health sector will have invasion by the metaverse much earlier than any other sector, he added. “The vision for India’s techie can only be achieved when the young developers and start-ups, including those from tier II & III cities, contribute to enabling future technologies like XR in the metaverse. I am glad that FICCI and Meta are launching this initiative which will not only focus on providing a monetary boost to the developers but will also support them with the right mentoring to build immersive technologies,” he added.

Speaking about the partnership on the program, Mr. Abhishek Singh, President & CEO of NeGD, (National e-Governance Division), MeitY, Govt of India said, “Open source technology-driven ecosystems can play a big role in building robust digital public goods which are interoperable and follow federated architecture. We thank Meta for their support and need for the partnership on this program.”

Mr. Kartik Sharma, FICCI Committee Member & Founder, Agnitio also shared his perspective during the event.

The XR Open Source program is the second program in India through which Meta aims to boost the developer ecosystem around immersive technologies and will further the open ecosystem for building the metaverse. From the very beginning, Meta has supported and launched various open-source initiatives such as No Language Left Behind (NLLB), a single multilingual AI model which supports 200 low-resource languages, including 25 Indian languages.

Last year Meta partnered with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to bring immersive technologies to over 10M students and 1M educators over the next 3 years. The partnership with CBSE underscores Meta’s commitment to India and reflects the joint ambition to universalize STEM education by ensuring that students across India have equitable access to quality educational content which will prepare them for the Future of Work in a digitally powered economy. In June 2022, Meta launched the LeARn Program to train 40,000 students in AR and developed the School of AR, a flagship program that up-skilled 1,000 developers to work on advanced capabilities in MetaSpark. Meta’s XR Programs and Research Fund is a two-year $50 million investment in programs and external research with industry partners, civil rights groups, governments, non-profits, and academic institutions.

GITAM bags the prestigious IGBC Green Champion Award for encouraging green education initiatives

Hyderabad, November  2022: The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) has bestowed the Green Champion Award, its most prestigious honor, to GITAM (Deemed to be University) for being an ‘Institution encouraging IGBC Green Education Programme’ through its Green Built Environment course for M.Arch students at GITAM.

The award comes in recognition of GITAM’s efforts to embrace sustainable goals and for having the potential to inspire others, thereby advancing the Green Building Movement in India. The Green Champion Award was received by Professor K. Mohan, Director, GITAM School of Architecture at IGBCs’ flagship event, the 20th Green Building Congress, in Hyderabad.

After an MoU that GITAM and IGBC signed earlier this year, a course titled Green Built Environment was introduced as a subject of study for the M.Arch students at GITAM. With a course in Sustainable Architecture already being taught at the institute since 2017, it solidified GITAM’s position as a leader in adopting and promoting green practices in architecture. GITAM has had an active student chapter of IGBC since 2016 which has been regularly conducting seminars, competitions, and other awareness programs on adopting sustainable practices.

More than 40 students have so far been trained by the GITAM School of Architecture to become IGBC Accredited Professionals and 28 faculty members are IGBC Accredited Professionals.

While accepting the award, Professor K. Mohan, Director of the School of Architecture, explained, “Our aim is to slowly approach net zero, and to accomplish this, a number of green initiatives are being promoted at the University campus like the use of innovative waste management, solar panels, energy reduction techniques in the use of water, energy-efficient lighting fixtures and many others.”

The on-campus vegetation, which comprises different trees, ground cover, and shrubs, has been a part of their research on how vegetation can reduce urban heat. The findings have been presented in many international research papers and conferences. They have also started working on a unique project for geo-tagging all the trees and plants on the campus which would help visitors and students get acquainted with the varied flora at the university campus.
