Dr Jayant Khandare receives prestigious Dr A V Ramarao Entrepreneurship Award

Pune:  Dr. Jayant Khandare, Chief Scientific Officer at Actorius Innovations and Research, has been conferred upon with the prestigious Dr. A V Ramarao Entrepreneurship Award from National Chemical Laboratory (NCL), Pune.
Dr. Jayant Khandare is an academician and technology entrepreneur with extensive experience in developing innovations and technologies in the areas of biotechnology, medical diagnostics and pharmaceutical sciences. He holds a prolific scientific publication record with more than 70 peer-reviewed publications, 15 US patents, multiple book chapters and numerous invited lectures.

Dr. Khandare is recipient of Alexander von Humboldt Experienced Researcher fellowship, Germany, the early Career Scientist award from the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), U.K. Fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC) and Fellow of Maharashtra Academy of Science (MASc) and Director- School of Consciousness, MIT WPU, Pune and the co-founder of biotech startups developing innovations in the area of cancer diagnostics and therapy.
Dr. Khandare is also Co-founder of Actorius Innovations and Research Pvt Ltd (AIR), a Pune-based research and development company that has created a novel biomaterial having critical applications in the life science, drug delivery and medical diagnostics field.
The company has launched its first product, the ‘OncoDiscover Liquid Biopsy Test’, a minimally invasive test which can be performed multiple times requiring just 1.5ml blood volume. This test is an excellent tool for therapy monitoring and can be performed at multiple time points such as during initial check-up, pre surgery, post-surgery, post chemotherapy and during follow-up. Since Circulating Tumour Cells (CTC) present in patient blood are enumerated (counted) by this test, it becomes a quantitative benchmark to monitor disease progression and therapy effectiveness.
Elaborating more on this technology, Dr Jayant Khandare said, “Using advanced biomaterials, we identify cancer cells from more than a billion cells present in that sample. We had taken ethical permission from Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai to conduct clinical trials. The biomaterial and specificity required is very high for this kind of test and we have managed to achieve it.”

Jasudben ML School and Bloomingdales Pre-Primary celebrated Children’s day filled with fun activities, love and laughter

18th November 2022: A country’s greatest wealth is its children. Chacha Nehru rightly said, “The children of today will make the India of tomorrow.” And, to commemorate the birth anniversary of India’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the nation celebrates Children’s Day on 14th November every year with great pomp and raises awareness on children’s education and their rights. This year, on the occasion of Children’s Day, Jasudben ML school and Bloomingdales Pre-Primary came together and planned various fun-filled activities for the students with a special “no books” day added to the list.

Students from Pre-Primary to class VII attended the school in civilian clothes of their choice, skipping their uniforms for the day. With several engaging, entertaining and joyous activities planned days ahead, the school was successful in making the day a memorable one for the students.
The Pre-Primary section was seen enjoying a train ride and a wonderful bouncy castle was also set up for these little ones. A popular children’s folktale from, Aesop’s fable, of ‘The Lion and the mouse’ was enacted by the teachers through a shadow puppet show. Apart from that, nursery children too were found engrossed in playing fun games, dancing their hearts out and enjoying the rides, and they were also given a medal as a takeaway.

Playschool children also received some temporary tattoos that were drawn by the teachers. The teachers also shared some stories about Chacha Nehru with the children. The students even got a shaker toy made by the teachers out of paper cups that the students themselves had previously painted, as a takeaway gift.

The teachers of the primary section performed a spectacular dance performance where they danced to the songs that the students have been dancing to in school, which brought a smile to the faces of those little ones. To express their excitement, the students even stood up and danced along with the teachers to the steps they were taught earlier. Students were also shown movies in their classrooms which they enjoyed thoroughly and later chocolate muffins were handed out to them.

As for the secondary section students, starting from classes 5 to 10, they were seen playing a few interesting games and watching popular movies suitable for young and adventurous minds. Movies like Baby’s Day Out were screened for the primary section, while Coco, Soul, Home Alone, and some other new films released this month, like Enola Holmes 2, and so on were shown to the students of higher classes. The teachers also prepared a bulletin board right outside their classrooms holding up a chart with the topic, “It’s cool to be a kid: Tell us why?”. Students gathered around and expressed their beautiful thoughts and feelings on this by writing on the chart. As a token of love from the teachers, all the students received a chocolate chip brownie.

Moreover, students of the 11th and 12th grades were told they would be having their English test that morning.. Imagine their surprise when they were told to board a bus that would take them to Movietime Suburbia instead. . Their happiness knew no bounds when they found out that they were about to watch one of the newly released Marvel movies, Black Panther 2 – a perfect film for the students on Children’s Day.

By celebrating crucial occasions and dates in the calendar, JML School and Bloomingdales Pre-Primary strive to contribute to an all-around holistic development and growth of their students beyond the classroom walls, invigorating them to become better citizens of the world.

The story revolves around three friends, all senior citizens who leave a comfortable life and embark on a trek to the Everest Base Camp. A simple trek turns out to be a personal, emotional and spiritual journey as they battle their physical limitations and discover the true meaning of freedom.

Announcing this new trend, Mr. Gautam Dutta, CEO, PVR Limited, said, “Through this movie, we can clearly see the revival of movies in cinemas that appeal to family audiences. Clearly ‘Uunchai is becoming the ‘60+ Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’, the 2011 hit movie where three childhood friends follow their dream. There has been a growing area of concern for the industry which saw direct-to-digital releases of movies when cinemas were shut and audience habits of consuming entertainment changing temporarily. Bollywood movies are the major contributors to the film exhibition business in India contributing the larger pie. Cinema is a catalyst to ‘together time’ for couples, families, friends and peer groups and hence the experience of bonding over the shared experience of a film rates much more than other entertainment avenues.

India is the 5th largest box office market in the world. India has the world’s largest film industry in terms of a number of movies produced in a year and one of the World’s largest film markets in terms of ticket sales. During the pre-covid year 2019, more than 1,833 films were released in India. MX Player strengthens its original slate with a high octane crime thriller – Dharavi Bank

Amping up its robust library of original series, MX Player is all set to entice viewers with the launch of the high-octane crime thriller ‘Dharavi Bank’. Directed by Samit Kakkad, this 10-episodic series sees Suniel Shetty make his digital debut as the ruthless and unattainable Thalaivan who is hunted by tough cop JCP Jayant Gavaskar portrayed by Vivek Anand Oberoi. On playing Thalaivan – Suniel Shetty further added saying, “This time around, it’s all about the technicians and the talent, it is a fact that everyone has been involved in this completely and I’m super excited. I thought I was Thalaivan the minute they narrated it to me, and somewhere down the line, I got the confidence that after a break of so many years, I can go back to school. I probably haven’t forgotten my craft. More so, Dharavi as a backdrop makes you feel you are back in India and that is the beauty of the show.”

In the chase of Thalaivan and breaking his crime nexus is the atypical cop JCP Jayant Gavaskar essayed by Vivek Anand Oberoi. Speaking about his role, Vivek said, “Jayant Gavaskar is a cop whose intentions when it comes to meting out justice are honest. However, he will use any means to get to his end. For me, it was interesting to delve into this aspect which I got to live for the entire duration of the show. Purely black and white characters can often prove to be one-dimensional. But here was a cop who has his eye on the goal, which was to ensure that justice is done at any cost, even if it means that the methods he uses are questionable or even manipulative. These layers and shades had me intrigued and hooked. I have portrayed him with a simmering intensity. One doesn’t know what he is planning. It was extremely exhausting but also rewarding to dig into the psyche and mind of such a character.”

Sonali Kulkarni plays the sharp and shrewd Chief Minister Janvi Surve and speaking about essaying this politician on screen, she said, “My personality has always been pleasant, fun-loving and honest types.. so it was quite a challenge to be playing Janvi Surve – an egoistic, hard-hearted and calculating woman who is so diametrically opposite to my nature. I enjoy such parts that test my versatility as an actor.”

Eastern India Healthcare Foundation (EIHF) & MCKS Trust Fund, Bangalore collaborates with Medica to give life to a daily wager

Kolkata | Hyderabad | New Delhi, 18th November 2022: Medica Group of Hospitals, the largest private hospital chain in Eastern India, at its flagship facility Medica Superspecialty Hospital in Kolkata conducted a ground-breaking successful plastic and reconstructive surgery on a 24-year-old male from Jagadishpur, Howrah. The team of experienced doctors from the Plastic Surgery department and Medica’s critical care team joined together for this complex case. The team put in their combined efforts under the leadership of Dr. Akhilesh K Agarwal, Senior Consultant Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeon, Department of Plastic Surgery, Medica Superspecialty Hospital to achieve this momentous feat on 6th November 2022.

Mr. Biplab Samanta, a 24-year-old technical worker, and the only bread earner met with a severe accident on 6th November while working on a machine. In the accident, all the fingers of his right hand were amputated at different levels. After the incident, he was taken to several nearby hospitals where he was informed that to prevent infection, his hand would have to be amputated at the wrist. It was not an easy choice to amputate his hand at the wrist level, that too for a technical worker who was the family’s only wage earner. To save his hand, he was brought to Medica emergency on the same day around 5 pm. He was screaming in pain & despite knowing the fact that his hand might be amputated at wrist level, he kept on thinking & worrying about the hospital fees & surgery cost. After examining his condition, his family was provided guidance on the possibility of reimplantation and its potential effects. They were also informed about the difficulty in reimplantation of the fingers as the parts were crushed at different levels.

The family was in a state of trauma, and they were extremely worried about the cost that will be incurred for the surgery & the entire treatment. They had no clue where to get the funds, and neither did they have a health insurance card that would have provided them access to some benefits. While the family repeatedly kept thinking about the entire situation, the clinicians kept losing their precious time to save the hand of the patient. At this point, the clinical staff and management of the hospital sat down to discuss all possible ways to help the family and save the young worker’s hand because losing a hand from wrist level will have a lifelong impact not just on the young man but also on his dependent family members. Medica reviewed their economic background & on humanitarian grounds, funds from Eastern India Healthcare Foundation (EIHF) & MCKS Trust Fund, Bangalore were raised & the patient’s entire cost was waived off by the hospital.

At 7 p.m. on the evening of 6th December, the surgery was done by Dr. Akhilesh K. Agarwal, Senior Consultant Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeon, Department of Plastic Surgery, Medica Superspecialty Hospital. The surgery was complex because the structures of all five fingers had to be reconstructed. Steel wires were used to fix all the finger bones, and eventually, the tendons (a fibrous connective tissue that attaches muscle to bone) were repaired. Blood vessels with a caliber of less than 1 mm were reattached under the microscope while taking care to maintain the patency of the lumen (a hollow passageway through which blood flows). Following surgery, the patient was monitored closely by Dr. Agarwal and Dr. Aviral Roy, Consultant-Intensivists, Internal Medicine & Critical Care, Medica Superspecialty Hospital. It was critical to take extra care to identify any potential vascular compromise so that action could be taken immediately to keep the circulation going.

Dr.Akhilesh Kumar Agarwal, who led the operation, said, “When he was brought to Medica for hospitalisation, he was in excruciating pain, and the reimplantation was urgently needed. So far, the recovery has been effective, but he will eventually require some corrective surgeries to fully recover, at which point all his fingers will be able to function and he will be able to carry out all his duties as required. Undoubtedly, this is a remarkable case that I have recently encountered. I send Mr. Samanta and his family my best wishes for a happy and healthy future.” He further added, “Although I am quite pleased with the results of this case, what makes me even happier are the smiling faces and sighs of relief on their faces when the expense was waived. It is our responsibility as healthcare providers to save a person’s life before considering any other concerns. Thus, on humanitarian grounds, we made the decision to not charge for this surgery.”

Dr. Alok Roy, Chairman, Medica Group of Hospitals, averred, “Regardless of one’s financial condition, religion, gender, nationality, etc., we are here to serve, and we are incredibly grateful to have done so. Even though every surgery has its own risks and complexities, it gives a doctor great pleasure when it is successful; & this is one such surgery. The patient was discharged with a very satisfying post-operative evaluation after 8 days of the surgery and is slowly getting back to his normal life.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Metastatic Breast Cancer

In general, women experience a lot of pain and illness, but they typically don’t talk about it with others. Most women who experience moderate to severe chest pain do not feel comfortable telling anybody about it. They frequently try to suppress a variety of physical symptoms, believing that they are the typical signs of stress brought on by their work. Avoiding these signs and symptoms could result in ignoring the warning indications of a large tumour forming in the body. One of the prominent forms of tumours is one that leads to breast cancer.

Breast Cancer is an abnormal cell growth that builds up and forms a lump in the breasts and is brought on by hormonal, lifestyle, environmental, and hereditary factors. People’s malignancies frequently spread from one body region to another. Metastasis is basically the process of cancer spreading and this happens when the cancer cells break away from the original tumour in the breast and travel to other body parts through the lymphatic system. Also, breast cancer can relapse in a different body part, months and years following the original diagnosis and treatment, known as metastatic recurrence. Not just women, men too may get diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer, although rarely. In women, it starts from the milk ducts but could spread to lymph nodes and various other body parts when not detected at an early stage. When this happens the breast cancer is referred to as metastatic breast cancer or stage IV breast cancer

Finding the signs of metastatic breast cancer and diagnosing it

 

The symptoms of metastatic breast cancer may vary from person to person depending on which body part it has spread to. Some of the most common signs of metastatic breast cancer include back, bone, or joint pain that does not go away, difficulty urinating (either incontinence or not being able to go), numbness or weakness anywhere in the body, a constant dry cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, chest pain, loss of appetite, abdominal bloating, pain, or tenderness constant nausea, vomiting, or weight loss, jaundice (a yellow tinge to the skin and whites of your eyes), severe headaches, vision problems (blurry vision, double vision, loss of vision), seizures, loss of balance and confusion.

The following tests are recommended to those experiencing any of the above signs for metastasis breast cancer diagnosis.

  • Blood tests including tumour markers in some patients
  • Whole-body bone scan with or without X-rays of specific bones
  • MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) of the spine or brain
  • CT (computed tomography) scan of the chest, abdomen, pelvis, or brain PET (positron emission tomography) scan
  • X-ray ultrasound of the abdomen or chest bronchoscopy
  • Pleural tap, also called a thoracentesis that removes fluid between the lung and chest wall, a spinal tap that removes fluid from around the spinal cord, and a tap of fluid in the abdomen (called a paracentesis) that removes fluid in the abdominal cavity can be used to check cancer cells from the areas where the signs have shown.

Also, a biopsy could be done to confirm if the cancer has certain characteristics like HER2 status and hormone receptor status that could influence the treating options.

Treating metastatic breast cancer 

Various approaches could be used for treating metastatic breast cancer and every treatment is customised to the unique condition. The first step of the treatment for metastatic breast cancer is systemic medication for treating cancer throughout the whole body. These include chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, targeted therapies, and immunotherapy. In certain specific cases, local treatments targeting a specific body part like surgery or radiation is recommended. Treatment techniques depend on three things – the body part where cancer has spread, the characteristics of cancer, and the history of cancer.

Living with metastatic breast cancer

 

Metastatic cancer doesn’t mean it is the end of life. Hence, one must plan to live with it. It is essential to find ways to manage one’s feelings, seek support from a group, family or friends and continue working following the diagnosis. The three most vital things to be kept in mind include:

  • Managing symptoms so that things are comfortable
  • Finding the support that hospice care can offer
  • Organising one’s finances

Finding the appropriate care and support can make lives of those with metastatic breast cancer convenient. One must pay adequate attention in seeking help for emotional support too as metastatic cancer may have an adverse impact on one’s psychology.

Career Launcher opens Study-Abroad centres across cities to meet post-pandemic demand for international colleges.

New Delhi, 18 November: Career Launcher, the EdTech arm of CL Educate, announced a significant push to its study abroad vertical by launching 12 study-abroad centers across eight cities. This is to meet the post-pandemic rapid rise in demand for international study destinations. The cities include Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Amritsar, Chandigarh, Panipat and Mysore. While Delhi and Mumbai have three centers each, the other cities have one center each, to begin with. The new Study Abroad centers are a mix of Company-Owned, Company-Operated (CoCo) and Franchise-Owned Franchise-Operated.

Arjun Wadhwa, CFO & CBO (International Education), CL Educate, said, “With the world reopening, the demand from students looking at international universities to pursue their higher education goals is growing at a very rapid pace. To guide students on their study and career path, we will rapidly expand our footprint across India to meet this demand through dedicated Study Abroad centers. The bulk of our new centers will be Franchise Partner driven, though we plan to adopt a hub-and-spoke model with a Central processing team and one Company-Owned center in all key geographies.”

These centers will provide full-service support, including Counselling, Test prep (IELTS, GMAT, GRE, SAT), Study Abroad Admissions Consulting, Student VISA support, Education loan assistance and accommodation support.
