Mid-day Bags the Prestigious Best Use of Audio Award at International Newspaper Marketing Association (INMA) 2022

India, June 2022: Mid-day, Mumbai’s home-grown and leading tabloid has won the ‘Best Use of Audio’ award at the Global Media Awards for their two-podcast series, ‘The Bombay Film Story’ and ‘Mid-day’s Mumbai Cricket Podcast’. The award was announced by International Newspaper Marketing Association (INMA) on 9th June 2022. The legacy awards being presented by INMA received 854 entries from 252 news brands across 46 countries this year.

Recognising the growing popularity of podcasts as a content format, Mid-day entered the arena with a bang. Since Mid-day is synonymous with Mumbai, the publication ventured into the world of podcasts with the two most engaging themes – Bollywood and Cricket. ‘The Bombay Film Story with Mayank Shekhar’ podcast narrates stories about Mumbai and cinema, some of its old chroniclers, and people who have been either on the side-lines or in the limelight, each with their own stories to tell. The entertainment editor and author, Mayank Shekhar, interviews people ranging from journalists, actors, producers, and actors to bring these unheard stories to the forefront.

Sharing his experience of creating the podcast, Mayank Shekhar said, “I think we are a verbal, storytelling, more than a reading culture. And I realized that with the podcast—not just with long conversations with the guests, but also the responses to it. And there’s nothing like preserving people and places—the times they were in—for posterity. Which is what the Bombay Film Story intends to do. That it could even win an international award for it, was a pleasant shock for me!”

On the other hand, in ‘Mid-day’s Mumbai Cricket Podcast’, the acclaimed sports journalist, Clayton Murzello traces the stories from those who have shaped the legacy of cricket in the city not only during their playing days, but long after. It is the only podcast solely focusing on Mumbai Cricket.

Expressing his joy on receiving the award, Clayton Murzello said, “I’m delighted to receive this honor and I’m sure the judges found something uniquely fascinating about Mumbai cricket. I can’t thank my guests enough as well as the people behind this podcast.”

Commenting on winning the accolades, Rachna Kanwar, Chief Operating Officer – Digital Media, Radio City and Mid-day said, “Over the years, Mid-day has successfully built a loyal readership online which includes Bollywood and Sports fans; fans who trust us to deliver credible news and exclusive stories. When the lockdown forced us into our homes and online readership saw a big jump, we had to find newer ways to engager readers, and that’s when the idea of Mid-day Podcasts germinated. Mid-day’s seasoned Print team readily agreed to be a part of this new journey and the result was magical. We launched The Bombay Film Story with Mayank Shekhar first and the overwhelming response to it nudged us to launch Mid-day’s Mumbai Cricket Podcast with Clayton Murzello soon after. The INMA award for ‘Best Use of Audio’ is a testament that Mid-day has been successful in living up to our readers’ expectations. We thank INMA and the jury for this honour.”

International Newspaper Marketing Association has been presenting these awards since 1937 to bring recognition to innovative content brought to light by various publications and news brands and celebrate the transformation of media across the globe. With this win, Mid-day has set a higher benchmark for the media industry in India.

Integration streamlines in-home peace of mind

June 2022: The advances of technology have meant a dramatic rise in the amount of devices we use in our homes. In fact, the European smart home market is expected to grow to USD 39.6 billion by 2025. This ranges from entertainment to practical everyday tasks like drawing curtains and dimming lights. But perhaps the most useful are those that allay our base fears around security in the home. Alarms, security cameras, and access systems are becoming increasingly popular as people strive to make their homes a secure and comforting haven – even within the context of their busy lives. Hikvison has a range of smart devices to provide that in-home peace of mind – and they can all be controlled from one place.

Too much of a good thing

With multiple devices comes a variety of different controlling mechanisms – usually one for each device separately. Remember the days when you had only one remote control for your TV, for example? Now you could conceivably have four or five for your entertainment system – TV, sound system, DVD player, satellite box, etc. This is a kind of ‘tipping point’ – when technology advancement can cause frustration, rather than making your life easier.

It’s this frustration that’s led to the popularity of systems that bring various elements of the home together. These range from smart speakers that allow the family to play music in different rooms, to apps that control lighting. And then there are the ‘digital assistants’ that can bring a number of IoT devices together all over the home.

Imagine being able to do this for your security. A central indoor station can provide access to all your alarms and security cameras. And this can also be available on an app, so you can verify alarm alerts even remotely. Add to this the ability to control your access point – ie front door – and you start to see how an integrated security system can provide great peace of mind, rather than adding multiple ‘interfaces’ to your daily life.

All-in-one Indoor station

Hikvision’s All-in-one Indoor Station provides a central device to be able to manage a homeowners CCTV, access control, alarm and intercom technologies. It has a range of functions allowing the user to keep an eye on all of these devices, giving them a holistic overview of their home security.

If an intruder sets off an alarm, the system can provide a video ‘footage’ clip from an adjacent camera, thanks to smart linkages. They can see this on the pre-installed HikConnect app too, with added functionality of zooming in and out on the image, and fisheye mode for relevant cameras.

The front door is usually where the home starts – and where the peace of mind also needs to begin. The All-in-one Indoor Station allows users to see who is at their door, and even let them in with the click of a button below the screen. This works too if they are using the app – so they can let someone in remotely once they have been able to verify their identity using the door intercom camera. Intercoms can also be fitted with two-way intercom – which means the user can have a conversation with the visitor, either through the Indoor Station or their app. This is particularly useful in a world of multiple deliveries encroaching on busy lives!

Open and simple to install

The story for installers is great too. The Android (v10) base of the device means its open architecture, so adaptions and 3rd party software can easily be integrated. The user experience is continually being improved, making it intuitive – both for users and installers. The fact that this means they don’t have to install multiple devices to manage an in-home solution saves them a lot of time and cost.

Alongside the HikConnect app is Hik-ProConnect – an app designed for installers to be able to manage and configure devices remotely. This also streamlines their aftercare efforts, with a wide range of activities being possible remotely, once they have their customer’s approval to do so.

While technology enters our lives at an increasing level, the smart money is on the methods of bringing disparate technologies together. Open platform architectures and platforms mean more and more devices will be able to talk to each other. This is the beginning of the world of advanced IoT, where we start to really see the benefits of smart connected technologies in our homes. No more scrabbling behind the sofa for a remote!

On the occasion of International MSME Day 2022, Wadhwani Foundation calls for structured support to MSMEs

Mumbai, June 2022: On the eve of International MSME Day, the global not-for-profit Wadhwani Foundation and its SME-led Initiative, Wadhwani Advantage, called for structured support for MSMEs as in post-pandemic times, small businesses need to adapt to new market dynamics, be confident of their product lines, and maintain competitive pricing.

Today, for example, access to cost-effective finance is mainly digital. Therefore, SMEs must pick up digital skills without which they are not likely to grow. Upskilling and reskilling the workforce in the MSME sector towards digitization will allow them access to broader sets of suppliers and customers, better payment systems, and broader market visibility, allowing them to scale while eliminating manual inefficiencies.

There is also a need for micro-enterprises (which form the bulk of the 63M SMEs, close to 95%) to mature into small enterprises and the small into mid-size SMEs. Sanjay Shah, Chief Operating Officer – India/SE Asia, Wadhwani Foundation, says, “With sixty-three million MSMEs creating 111 million jobs in India, they are the largest employment creators in the country and contribute significantly to India’s GDP. Structured support to MSMEs in post-pandemic times will largely be driven by their adoption of digitization, leading to larger collaborative ecosystems, broader sets of suppliers and customers, and better payment systems that fast become the path for business growth. The Wadhwani Advantage initiative is working on supporting small and medium enterprises (SMEs) through a growth focus program for larger SMEs and a DIY (Do-it-Yourself) program to scale-up small SMEs. Both these programs will be augmented with virtual helpdesk support for SMEs. In addition, we are also launching a Wadhwani Advantage community platform that is meant to provide an SME Social Network for peer-to-peer networking and connects to advisors and customers.”

There are multiple challenges that inhibit the growth of MSMEs, like inadequate infrastructure, lack of access to capital, low productivity, and dearth of innovation. As a result, ~99% of businesses are unable to grow and remain micro in their life cycle despite having great potential for the same.

On the eve of International MSME Day 2022, Samir Sathe, Executive VP – Wadhwani Advantage at Wadhwani Foundation, says, “MSMEs are at an inflection point in India and carry the unmet potential to grow 2x-10x. We at Wadhwani Foundation remain committed to accelerating their growth with our unique model of external curated advisor-led consulting, PMO and subsidized funding support, productized IP, and a proposed community platform that will enable SMEs to access their ecosystem, thereby facilitating a systemwide change.”

According to a study by Assocham-Crisil, India’s MSME sector is expected to rebound with a 15% to 17% growth in revenues for the financial year ending 2022. Therefore, it is imperative that the support to the MSME sector remains strong and steadfast.
