Recognizing Endometriosis Awareness Month

While efforts aimed at increased endometriosis education, research funding, and access to care occur throughout the year, the month of March is officially designated as a time for endometriosis stakeholders including patients and their families, health organizations, businesses, and legislators to come together to raise awareness and educate the public about the disease. The Center for Endometriosis Care (CEC) is pleased to again lend its annual support to various March endeavors.

Endometriosis is a systemic, inflammatory disease affecting approximately 190 million individuals globally. Characterized at surgery by the presence of endometrium-like tissue found outside the uterus, usually with an associated inflammatory process, it is a spectrum disease with a variety of subtypes and clinical presentations. Pain, inflammation, infertility, development of endometriomas (“chocolate cysts”), fibrosis, formation of adhesions (fibrous bands of dense tissue), GI and other organ dysfunction, and much more are common with endometriosis. Often found in the pelvic cavity, the disease can also be located in distant locations like the lungs. Unfortunately, misinformation about endometriosis persists, and its far-reaching, systemic effects often go unrecognized. Delayed diagnosis and poor management are common, with many patients suffering through ineffective surgeries and inadequate medical therapies.

The CEC is a distinctive Center of Expertise with singular focus. Established over thirty years ago for the dedicated treatment of the disease, the Center unflinchingly treats endometriosis exclusively through an excisional, multidisciplinary approach. “So many patients have been given dismal prospects and limited choices. To be able to offer our patients another alternative through the meticulous and advanced excision of their disease via Laparoscopic techniques, and to see the long-lasting, successful effects, makes what we do so worthwhile,” said world-renowned endometriosis specialist and CEC Medical Director, Dr. Ken Sinervo.

The Center’s team, led by Dr. Sinervo, has provided compassionate care to thousands of patients from nearly seventy countries since it was founded by endometriosis pioneer, Dr. Robert B. Albee, Jr., in 1991. In addition, the CEC serves as one of the leading disease advocates and educators in an effort to drive changes, collaborating on many global initiatives including Nursing education and providing surgical training. Dr. Sinervo, Dr Jeff Arrington and the CEC team also serve as frequent Faculty, presenting on endometriosis year-round at various lay and professional conferences. As part of the CEC’s continuing efforts to help those who may be suffering, the Center also encourages any individual who has, or thinks they may have, endometriosis to take advantage of the Center’s free records review and phone consultation with a CEC physician.

Kate (Boyce) Donahue, BCPA, a scientist and Board-Certified professional Patient Advocate, reflected on her own journey as Awareness Month approaches. “Endometriosis is a whole-body disease that almost destroyed me,” she said. “I am grateful to the Center for helping me physically heal and get back on my feet.” As Co-Founder of the popular advocacy organization, EndoGirls Blog (@endogirlsblog), Kate encourages “all those with endometriosis to research the disease using authoritative resources and above all, to not lose hope.”

FICCI CASCADE, Ministry of Consumer Affairs join hands to encourage youth to participate in nation building

New Delhi, 1st March 2022: FICCI’s Committee Against Smuggling and Counterfeiting Activities Destroying the Economy (CASCADE) has joined hands with the Ministry of Consumer Affairs to encourage the country’s youth to be a part in the socio-economic development of the nation by creating a youth movement against smuggling and counterfeiting. In this endeavour, FICCI CASCADE in association with the Ministry is organizing a painting competition, on the theme “Youth for Socio-Economic Development — Paving the Way for India’s Amrit Kaal”.

With the objective to generate awareness on the adverse impacts of smuggling and counterfeiting, especially among school children who are the consumers of tomorrow, this competition is being organized as a run-up to the World Consumer Rights Day celebrations by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs. This day, which is celebrated the world over on 15th March stands in solidarity with the international consumer movement, demanding consumer rights to be respected and protected.

The inter-school painting competition is open for students from Class IX to XII from schools across the country. The top three entries will receive a certificate of recognition, along with a cash prize of Rs 50,000, Rs 25,000 and Rs 15,000, respectively. The participants can send their work at cascade@ficci.com till 2nd March 2022. The winners will be awarded during the World Consumer Rights Day celebrations organized by the ministry.

Shri Rohit Kumar Singh, Secretary, Ministry of Consumer Affairs said, “Our future generations are the hope for real change, empowering and strengthening them to act for national development will help in shaping the future of our country in a brighter and more prosperous manner”. “World Consumer Rights Day is celebrated every year by our ministry to protect the rights of consumers and to ensure that the consumers are not subjected to market abuse or social injustice that may undermine their rights, he added.

According to a 2019 FICCI CASCADE study, large scale smuggling in only five Indian industries resulted in a loss of Rs 1,17,253 crore to the economy. It also led to 16.36 lakh job losses. Currently, India is the fastest-growing economy and is projected to be the world’s third-largest economy by 2035. At this stage, it is imperative to put an end to smuggling and counterfeiting, which has the potential to derail the country’s growth momentum.

Mr. Anil Rajput, Chairman, FICCI CASCADE said, “The youth of India are the country’s future. As India marks 75 years of its glorious independence and enters into Amrit Kaal, the 25-year-long leadup to India@100, the youth will play a pivotal role in nation building and advocating socially responsible behavior towards the country’s development.”

FICCI CASCADE is a dedicated forum on the agenda of combating smuggling and counterfeiting. Over the years, FICCI CASCADE is working on creating awareness on tackling this problem which is a serious threat to public health and safety. Along with policymakers, industry, enforcement officials and media, CASCADE has been working closely with the country’s youth in its fight to address this issue through various interschool and intercollege competitions and programmes.

In a global first, FICCI CASCADE also launched the Anti-Smuggling Day on 11th February this year to raise greater consciousness and create a global response in addressing this menace.

Comments from Dr Arun, Global Chief Economist, Dun & Bradstreet

“Supply-chain disruptions will persist throughout 2022 prolonging delivery delays and goods shortages, keeping inflation elevated, and prompting firms’ recalibration of supply-chain management. Monetary tightening in advanced economies, kicked off by the Bank of England in October and soon to be followed by the US Federal Reserve, will add upward pressures for major currencies and increase financing costs in the coming months In India, recovery in domestic economic activity is yet to be broad-based prompting the Central Bank to keep policy rate unchanged for the 10th time. While this raises depreciation pressures on rupee, high FX reserve buffers and modest level of the current account deficit provide a cushion against external shocks. Reopening of the economy as the 3rd wave moderated as quickly as it surged is likely to support traction in business continuity and economic activities” said Dr Arun Singh, Global Chief Economist, Dun & Bradstreet.
