Ms Lakshmi Manchu dedicates her dream 100 km bicycle ride to Aditya Mehta foundation

Hyderabad: Prominent actress, producer and humanitarian, Ms Lakshmi Manchu pedaled her maiden 100 kms on a bicycle from Infinity Para-sports Academy and Rehab Centre, Rasoolpura to Toopran and back, to raise funds for para-athletes at Aditya Mehta Foundation (AMF). Shri Jayesh Ranjan, IAS, Principal Secretary IT, flagged of the ride at 5:00 am at the Infinity Para-sports Academy and Rehab Center, Begumpet. Ms Lakshmi concluded the ride at the same venue around 11:30 am and got a momentous and rousing welcome from the Para-athletes at AMF. She was joined in the ride by the Indian Para-cycling Team and few other cyclists. AMF is a non-profit organization that aids people with disabilities to pursue sports while providing self-sustenance.

Ms Lakshmi Manchu underwent rigorous training under the guidance of Aditya Mehta, an UCI certified cycling coach, to give wings to her dream of pedaling 100 kms on bicycle for the first time in her life. Her strenuous training regimen spread over the last one month without a break every single day as early as 5.00 am, involved 30 to 50 kms ride, on flats, slopes and hilly terrains to build the necessary speed and strength.

An elated Ms Lakshmi Manchu, on completion of her maiden 100 kms bicycle ride said, this is the first time I have done something as stupendous as this, the maximum I pedaled till date including during training was fifty kilometers, I was not sure if I could do it and even today morning, I wasn’t sure, but accomplished it. I have never done good in sports despite my dad being associated with sports, in fact I was last in a swimming race. But feel proud and happy to have accomplished this. The objective of my ride was not to just raising money, but to create awareness about the facility here and let people know that they are here to train and take care of you and push you to your limits to make you realize your potential. We underestimate our capability, but if we are determined we can accomplish much bigger things. I have been associated with Aditya Mehta foundation for over six years. The academy here provides training for para-athletes in all sports, one need not be an athlete to come here, get trained and become one. The Foundation has been doing some wonderful work, all the Police forces personnel who while serving in the frontline loose their arms or legs, are counselled and rehabilitated here. The trainees from here brought glory to the country by winning several medals. Aditya Mehta was himself not an athlete, he lost his leg in an accident, he didn’t despair over it and loose heart, instead he was determined to do something not just for himself but many like him and he created this Foundation with that objective. His entire family is dedicated to the cause he took up. During the pandemic the Foundation faced challenges in raising funds to sustain itself. I took on the responsibility to raise funds through this ride, set a target of raising Rs 5 lakhs, but could raise Rs 6 lakhs, Mr Shobu came forward and donated another matching Rs 6 lakhs to it and have raised in all Rs 13 lakhs. My advice to those who want to do physical training is, start small, find friends with similar interest to sustain and motivate yourself. You need to push yourself and can achieve more than what you thought you could.

Ms Lakshmi Manchu is sensitive and holds dear the cause of specially abled athletes, over the years she contributed enormously in ensuring their wellbeing and raising their spirits to excel. This time she tagged her dream of cycling 100 kms with a cause dear to her heart and is raising funds for AMF’s para-athletes. Ms Lakshmi Manchu had committed to raise Rs. 5 lakhs through this expedition, but the initiative picked up such momentum that already Rs. 13 lakhs have been raised and counting, says Aditya Mehta. Pandemic badly hit our fund-raising ability, as most people donated to PM and CM relief funds, which was necessary at that hour, this initiative of Ms Lakshmi Manchu provides succor to the Foundation.

AMF launched the 1st of its kind Para-Sports Rehabilitation and Training Academy in Asia in November 2019, which was inaugurated by Dr. SK Joshi, IAS, then Chief Secretary, Govt of Telangana. The foundation trains Divyaangans from across the nation including CAPF and civilians, from basic level in 28 para-sports at the Academy.

Colours bridge emotional distances, in Surf excel’s latest Holi campaign

National: The pandemic had isolated all sections of the society last year. It struck at the very heart of what makes us human – our social and emotional connection with one another. Even though lives seem to be going back to normal slowly, certain vulnerable segments of the society like elderly and senior citizens continue to remain socially distant for safety. And while we all want to visit our loved ones, this has been hard given the risks associated with travelling and socializing. For our elders, this also means that they have been deprived of the emotional and social warmth of being close to their families for a long time.

Surf Excel’s latest Holi campaign takes forward its unique ‘Daag Achhe Hain’ brand proposition and continues to use colours as a medium of ‘togetherness’. This year, it shows how the colours of Holi can help bridge emotional distances and bring hearts closer, despite physical distancing.

Surf Excel’s latest campaign #RangAchheHain shows a heart-warming gesture by an innocent boy who wishes to include his friend Rancho, an elderly neighbor, in the Holi celebrations. On realizing that Rancho cannot be included in the festivities like everyone else,he decides to have his own ingenious yet responsible celebration with Rancho. The TVC builds the emotional quotient as the boy says, ‘Mere haath nahi pahunchenge, isliye rang pahuncha diye.” The ingenuity of the boy and his empathy towards Rancho brings alive the true spirit of Holi and demonstrates that physical distance should not deter emotional connections, a fact vividly showcased in the ad.

Commenting on the launch of the campaign, Prabha Narasimhan, Executive Director & VP – Home Care , South Asia, Hindustan Unilever Ltd, said, “Holi is one of the biggest and most loved festivals in our country and we have been able to create a strong emotional connect with our audiences through our Holi campaigns in the last two years. This year is a bit different as we are all still reeling from the effects of the pandemic, which has created both physical and emotional distances. Addressing the emotional needs of the vulnerable segment of population, the ad shows how a young boy endeavors to include the elderly in the festive fervor through a simple yet creative way of making colors reach where hands cannot. It is a naturalextension of our brand philosophy of ‘Daag achhe hain’, in which we have always shown children getting dirty while doing good deeds & demonstrating good values. We do hope that people are inspired to find their own unique ways to connect with their families this festive season.”

Talking about the conceptualization of the campaign, Carlos Pereira, Creative Director, said, “The campaign continues to build on the theme of how “Holi colours can bring people together”. But this year, given the new rules of engagement due to the pandemic, it was important to also showcase how Holi can be celebrated in a responsible manner. The campaign reflects on how colours can be a medium for fostering emotional togetherness, even though there may be physical distance between us.”

The campaign will be live from 1st March across TV, digital & outdoor media.

This Holi remember don’t forget to spread cheer around because ‘Jo dilon ko paas laaye, woh rang achhe hain’!

Only two ways to get immunity from the virus – either you get infected or you get vaccinated, say experts at Neuberg Diagnostics panel

The experts at Neuberg’s Panel discussion on “Coronavirus – variants and vaccination” said without any hesitancy, frontline healthcare workers and senior citizens with co-morbidities must come forward to take vaccination.

Dr V. Ravi, Former professor of Neurovirology at NIMHAN and Nodal Officer for genomic confirmation of SARS-CoV-2 Government of Karnataka, said, “The available data has shown there are not many severe instances, so senior citizens and people above 45 with or without co-morbidities must take the vaccination. Because with co-morbidities, senior citizens require it more than the person of 30 to 35 age.”

He further said, “Misinformation related vaccines has put frontline health workers on guard for no reason. The hesitancy is the combination of the factors. The first and foremost being the fact that we feel that we are over the hill, then why should we take the vaccine. There is this perception that these are fast tracked vaccines, so safety is an issue.

People must remember that although these are fast-tracked vaccines but have undergone minimum three phases of trials before they were rolled out for use. There has been pre-clinical phase where animals have been given the vaccine, they were challenged with live virus, and there was protection shown. These things are not communicated properly to people and so there is lot of misperception.”

Dr V Ramasubramanian, Infectious Diseases Specialist, Apollo Hospital, said,“People must realize that vaccination saves life. There are differences in efficacy but even then, I would say, if there is 10-20% boost in my health then I would go for it. It is not going to harm anyone.

My appeal to senior citizen is just go get your jab. People with co-morbidities are at the higher risk, but we also know vaccination decreases the chances of hospitalization and death. Is vaccine safe – the answer is ‘it is safe’. My father is 90-year-old, he has taken the vaccine and we know it is safe.”

Dr Saranya Narayan, Chief Microbiologist, Neuberg Diagnostics, said, “Vaccination will help us in combating second wave. At our lab, the frontline workers were apprehensive however when we educated them about its safety, they did come forward for jab. And we have seen zero side effects so far.”

Indigital Technologies Makes Indian Women Thyroid Aware

New Delhi: Thyroid diseases are common worldwide. In India too, there is a significant burden of thyroid diseases. According to a projection from various studies on thyroid disease, it has been estimated that about 42 million people in India suffer from thyroid diseases. According to statistics and research by NCBI (National Centre of Biotechnology Information), thyroid disorders are on the rise in India. Approximately 1 in 10 Indian adults suffer from hypothyroidism, a condition in which the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormones to meet the needs of the body. This condition is twice as prevalent in women as in men and is common among women of child-bearing age.

Thyroid symptoms are silent and generally ignored by the people. Indian men and especially women are 3 times more prone to thyroid.

The opportunity arises here as to how to educate people around the thyroid and its cure while they wait for their turn. With technology advancement in the pharma and healthcare sector which lets people to learn and understand around the deficiencies and symptoms of Thyroid.

Indigital Technologies, a research based digital healthcare technology company with 3 provisional patents on its name, introduced a solution through a campaign named ‘WiFi Thyroid Clinics’ in association with Thyronorm. Uncovering the Anti-Myeloma Resistance Files

New Delhi: Multiple myeloma patients live much longer today than in the past, thanks to new targeted anti-myeloma drugs, but ultimately most develop resistance to the medications, and in some the disease is resistant to therapy from the start. Weizmann Institute of Science researchers, in collaboration with physicians from Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center (TASMC), have made use of extremely sensitive genomic technology to reveal genetic pathways that characterize some of the more resistant cases of multiple myeloma. Their study, reported in Nature Medicine, may lead to a more informed, personalized treatment for these patients, and it paves the way to using this new technology for discovering additional disease targets in other cancers.

Malignant myeloma is a cancer of the antibody-producing plasma cells found in the bone marrow. To expose the mechanisms the malignant plasma cells use to evade the anti-myeloma drugs, Dr. Assaf Weiner, Mor Zada, Dr. Shuang-Yin Wang and other members of a research team headed by Prof. Ido Amit of Weizmann’s Immunology Department studied newly diagnosed myeloma patients whose cancers had failed to respond to the initial therapy or relapsed soon afterwards.

The patients, treated at TAMSC and 14 other hospitals all over Israel, were enrolled in a clinical trial – led by Dr. Yael C. Cohen, head of the Myeloma Unit at TAMSC – aimed at testing whether a combination of four anti-myeloma drugs could overcome the cancer’s resistance. “Patients who fail to respond to the first line of treatment have poor prospects for survival, so new treatment strategies are urgently needed,” Dr. Cohen says.

While the physicians evaluated the success and safety of the combined approach, the Weizmann scientists collaborated with them to try to figure out what genetic changes had occurred in the patients’ cancers to make them resistant to the drugs. The researchers obtained samples of bone marrow taken from these patients before and at various stages during and after the combination therapy, and analyzed them using single-cell RNA sequencing. This technology creates high-resolution genetic profiles of thousands of individual cells simultaneously, enabling researchers to analyze the cancer’s genetic makeup at an unprecedented level of detail.

“What’s unique about this technology is that it helps distinguish between different types of cancer cells in the same patient, whereas standard hospital techniques examine all those cells together, including the healthy plasma cells, in bulk,” Weiner says. “And these different cell types may respond differently to treatment, so obtaining a complete cellular and molecular profile of the cancer is crucial to understanding why a certain treatment might not work, or why some tumor cells may develop resistance.”

The scientists created detailed profiles of tens of thousands of bone marrow cells collected from each of the 41 patients in the clinical trial. They then compared them with the profiles of bone marrow cells collected from healthy people, as well as from newly diagnosed multiple myeloma patients without primary treatment resistance. By analyzing this vast amount of genomic data with the help of machine learning and other computer-science tools, they managed to identify several pathways that were active in people with resistant multiple myeloma, but not in healthy donors or in patients whose myeloma had responded to the treatment.

In particular, they identified 30 genes that seemed to make up a genetic signature of resistance. “We found that these genes belonged to genetic pathways responsible for protein folding and degradation, and for cellular response to stress,” Dr. Shuang-Yin Wang explains. These pathways were abnormally active in nearly half of the patients with resistant disease, apparently enabling the cancer to escape the effects of common anti-myeloma drugs known as proteasome inhibitors. As their name implies, these drugs shut down the cellular machine called a proteasome, which destroys misfolded proteins. As a result, an excess of misfolded proteins jams the rest of the cellular machinery and ends up killing the malignant cell. The signature pathway discovered by the Weizmann scientists helps the malignant plasma cells to fold their proteins more efficiently – a clever trick that prevents the jamming, thereby limiting the effects of the proteasome inhibitor drugs.

The patients with this genetic signature responded poorly to the combination therapy in the trial. To investigate further, the scientists looked for this signature in a broader, independent group of myeloma cases and found it in about five percent of all newly diagnosed patients. This prevalence increased dramatically in patients whose disease had progressed after they had received several lines of treatments – as was to be expected, considering that almost all multiple myeloma patients ultimately develop resistance to therapy.

Next, the researchers looked for ways to overcome this resistance. They showed that they could block the aggressive protein folding pathway by silencing one of its key genes, called PPIA. “When we deleted this gene from the genome of multiple myeloma cells using CRISPR gene editing technology, we found that the modified cells were vastly more sensitive to anti-myeloma proteasome inhibitor drugs,” Zada explains.

The researchers then exposed multiple myeloma cells from patients with resistant disease to a drug called Cyclosporin A, which neutralizes the activity of PPIA, after which they added the anti-myeloma proteasome inhibitor drug. The drug was much more effective at killing the cancer cells when applied with Cyclosporin A than without, which suggests that their combined use may help reverse the resistance to proteasome therapy. The next step is a clinical trial that will test whether Cyclosporin A can help treat multiple myeloma patients who have the newly identified genetic signature and are resistant to all current therapies.

“This research can serve as a roadmap for integrating single-cell sequencing into other clinical trials – enabling physicians to treat patients with drugs that are best suited to their disease and also finding new molecular targets for the development of more effective treatments,” Amit sums up.

Study participants included Dr.Chamutal Bornstein, Eyal David, Dr. Adi Moshe, Dr.Baoguo Li, Shir Shlomi-Loubaton and Dr.Chamutal Gur of Weizmann’s Immunology Department; Dr. Moshe E. Gatt of Hadassah Medical Center; Dr. Noa Lavi of Rambam Health Care Campus; Dr.Chezi Ganzel of ShaareZedek Medical Center; Dr. Efrat Luttwak and Prof. IritAvivi of Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center; Dr.IulianaVaxman and Dr. Oren Pasvolsky of Rabin Medical Center; Dr. Evgeni Chubar of Emek Medical Center; Dr.OryRouvio of Soroka Medical Center; Dr.Mouna Ballan of Carmel Medical Center; Dr. Tamar Tadmor of Bnai Zion Medical Center; Dr. Anatoly Nemets of Barzilai Medical Center; Dr.OsnatJarchowcky Dolberg of Meir Medical Center; Dr. Olga Shvetz of Kaplan Medical Center; Dr.MeiravLaiba of Assuta Ashdod Hospital; Prof. OferShpilberg of Assuta Medical Centers; and Dr. Najib Dally of Ziv Medical Center.

Rental Appreciation Trumps Capital Price Growth in Top Luxury Markets Since 2014

Mumbai: Amidst various industry reforms in the last seven years, multiple new trends emerged in the Indian residential real estate market. Strikingly, housing rentals in key luxury markets saw better y-o-y growth between 2014-2020 than average capital prices in the same localities.

Anuj Puri, Chairman – ANAROCK Property Consultants says, “The average rentals for a house of minimum 2,000 sq. ft. size in the top 7 cities’ key luxury hotspots rose anywhere between 17% to 26% in 2020, as compared to 2014. In the same period, average capital prices in these micro-markets saw a maximum rise of 15% – and some even saw a marginal dip.”

To illustrate – ANAROCK data indicates that the average monthly rentals in Gurugram’s Golf Course Road increased by 17% in 2020 over 2014, while average property prices in the same period declined marginally – from INR 13,167 per sq. ft. in 2014 to INR 13,150 per sq. ft. in 2020.

Among the top 7 cities, Hyderabad’s HITECH City saw the highest rental appreciation of 26% between 2014 and 2020; in the same period, average property prices saw a 12% jump.

“ANAROCK data also reveals that from 2014 to 2020, rental prices in the top luxury markets saw consistent y-o-y growth – averaging between 3-6% annually,” says Mr Puri. “In contrast, capital appreciation in this period either remained range-bound or varied each year. Some years saw a decent yearly rise, even as high as 7%, while prices dropped by approx. -5% in other years – particularly in 2017, when many micro-markets saw capital prices plunge against the preceding year.”

In 2017, various structural reforms like RERA and GST were implemented. After this period, most localities only saw a marginal capital price rise averaging between 1-3% – while rental markets continued their growth run.

Due to the pandemic, 2020 was an outlier year for Indian rental markets, with most luxury localities recording either no change in average monthly rentals (compared to the preceding year) or seeing some decline. Without a doubt, COVID-19 impacted luxury rental markets amidst the growing WFH culture. Average property prices showed little or no change in 2020 over 2019.

Top Luxury Hotspots – Rental vs Capital Price Changes

The luxury residential rental market saw a setback due to COVID-19, but now appears to have recovered with demand for rental luxury properties back almost to pre-COVID levels. Monthly rentals in some of the localities have begun heading north. With vaccinations now rolling out and positivity returning, these rental market will pick up new momentum.

Some of the prominent luxury markets in the top 7 cities that performed well between 2014 and 2020 may see further short to mid-term boosts:

In Bengaluru, the luxury residential hotspot JP Nagar saw avg. monthly rentals appreciate by 24% in 2020 over 2014, while capital prices in the period rose by 8%. Likewise, Rajajinagar saw rental prices rise by 22%, and capital prices by 15%.

In MMR, luxury rentals in Tardeo rose 23% in this period, while capital prices increased by 8%. Similarly, in Worli, the average monthly rentals for a minimum 2,000 sq. ft. area home rose by 21%, while capital prices rose by 6%.
In NCR, rentals in luxury hotspot Golf Course Road increased by 17% while capital prices saw a meagre decline. In contrast, Golf Course Extension Road saw rentals increase by 18% and capital prices by 7% in this period.

In Chennai, luxury rentals in Anna Nagar rose 17% in this period, while capital prices increased by 10%. Similarly, in Kotturpuram, the average monthly rentals rose by 19% while capital prices rose by 7%.

In Hyderabad, the luxury residential hotspot Jubilee Hills saw avg. monthly rentals appreciate by 15% in 2020 over 2014, while capital prices in this period rose 10%. HITECH City saw the maximum rental price rise of 26%, while capital prices increased by 12%.

In Pune, the rentals in Koregaon Park rose 19% in this period, while capital prices increased by 14%. Similarly, in Prabhat Road, the average monthly rentals rose by 23% while capital prices rose by just 5%.

In Kolkata, luxury home rentals in Alipore rose 20% in 2020 against 2014, while capital prices increased by 13%. Similarly, in Ballygunge, the average monthly rentals rose 19% while capital prices rose by 13%.
