Delhi CM Unveils Project StepOne’s COVIDSocial Impact Report; Praises the Community-led Volunteer Network

New Delhi, 20.08.2020: The Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today unveiled a social impact report of the COVID management measures taken by the Delhi government and outlined how the efforts were efficiently backed by Project StepOne, a community-led volunteer initiative. Till 6th August, StepOnevolunteers and doctors have consulted 8,10,000 COVID-positive patients in Delhi and prevented 71,900 new cases and counselled 747 patients for mental health matters.

Project StepOne is a voluntary, non-profit organization consisting of technologists, doctors and creative solution providers began functioning in Delhi on 1st June and offers teleconsultation and telemedicine services for COVID and non-COVID patients, including mental health. The effective home isolation and home quarantine monitoring solution managed 3,88,000 patients in home isolation, which in turn, helped to make as many as 20,174 beds available for critical patients. The Chief Minister remarked that the initiative had led to a cumulative 2524 lives saved by not only escalating emergency flagging through teleconsultation by doctors but also by counsellors guiding recovered citizens to donate at the plasma bank managed by the Government of Delhi.

“The challenges were overwhelming but the interventions were strategically planned to optimize efforts. StepOne efficiently blended technological interventions and human empathy to establish a COVID-positive triaging system, management of ambulances and hospital beds as well as a plasma bank. At its peak, Project StepOne was handling 4000+ live calls a day. We thank the Delhi Government for this opportunity to serve and our key partners – Genpact, COVID Marshals, Kaleyra, Freshworks, COVID Response, and SHEROES – for all their support and constant motivation,” says Raghavendra Prasad T S, Founder, StepOne.

StepOne is currently supporting 15 state governments and city administrators in 33 languages through a network of 7000+ doctors and is endorsed by 32 state and national medical associations and colleges. The initiative is backed by a grant of 25 lakhs each by ACT and Omidyar Network and is efficiently supported by 156 volunteers of the StepOne team and over 550 volunteers of the citizen response team.

DrShuchin Bajaj, the core team member with Project StepOne, says“We have saved so many lives by just getting the ambulance to serious patients. Our doctors have called them, assessed that the patient is serious, sent the ambulance, taken the patient to the hospital. A lot of patients with saturation 70 or 80 or 85 were caught well in time by our doctors. The Delhi Government also has to be thanked for this, they agreed to what we wanted to do, and allotted single points of contact who took care of what was needed.”

StepOne launches National COVID Telemed Helpline

New Delhi, August 18, 2020: StepOne, a non-profit volunteer-driven collective of 7000 doctors, has announced a National COVID Telemed Helpline, offering inclusive and 24×7 access to Healthcare experts to citizens of India, free of cost. The helpline, +91-9745697456, is now live for citizens across the country living in the shadow of the rising pandemic. The helpline will provide TeleMed services under COVID related, mental help and video consultation for non-COVID related cases.

Citizens can call the helpline number anytime from anywhere without any charge and will get a call back from a healthcare expert within minutes to understand the needs of the caller. Callers can share the basis of their symptoms which, if required, a doctor would call back and guide them on the next steps. StepOne has also come up with a web-based tele-screening bot that interacts with citizens who wish to share their symptoms and passes the information to a doctor based on the symptoms. It has also come up with a mental health helpline providing counselling to citizens for expressing their issues for appropriate resolutions.

Furthering its goal of ‘health for all’ even during the pandemic, the Integrated Health and Wellbeing (IHW) Council has partnered with Project StepOne, a non-profit volunteer-driven collective of 7000 doctors, for a shared vision and objective.

Since the beginning of lockdown and through the staged unlocks, IHW Council has made significant and sustained headway in providing scientifically-valid information to people on a host of topics under the banners of ‘Gratitude Memorial for Health Workers’, ‘Care during Coronavirus’, ‘Good Air Warriors’, and ‘India IVF Summit’, to mention a few, comprising over dozens of web-based sessions with a collective audience reach of over 5 lakh people. The collaboration with StepOne will help the IHW Council further its request for a memorial for health workers who are the frontline warriors against the pandemic, a call endorsed by ministers, lawmakers, doctors, and people at large.

Project StepOne is India’s largest group of volunteer doctors and technologists fighting COVID-19 using telemedicine, along with mental health support and non-COVID care. An initiative by Raghavendra Prasad T S, StepOne runs scalable helplines powered by thousands of volunteer doctors who connect citizens with a doctor they need on the phone. The platform brings together more than 7000 doctors who have already handled 5 million calls, provided over 4 lakh teleconsultations, conducted over 25,000 mental health counselling sessions and have been able to identify over 40,000 high-risk COVID-19 suspects. The volunteer doctors have also managed to prevent about 3.2 lakh people from getting infected.
