Women in Parliament: Experiences From Sweden

Embassy of Sweden logoNew Delhi: The Embassy of Sweden, in collaboration with Femme First Foundation, organized Women in Parliament: Experiences from Sweden, a virtual discussion between women Members of Parliament from Sweden and aspiring women politicians from India. The event, which was held on September 4, 2021, was a first of its kind and was conceptualised against the backdrop of Sweden’s Feminist Foreign Policy.

The Ambassador of Sweden to India Mr Klas Molin gave the opening remarks.

Ambassador Klas Molin said:

““Gender equality and equal rights for all is a pillar of Swedish foreign policy. It means respecting rights, allocating resources and securing representation at all levels. We are proud to support the mission of Femme First and the fellowship program Women in Government as an example of how to work constructively to increase and improve participation in politics and government by women.”

Women in Parliament: Experiences from Sweden was curated and conducted by Femme First Foundation, a nonpartisan non-profit organisation working for women’s leadership in India, as a part of their ongoing Women in Government Fellowship – a six-month program that is focused on capacity-building, training, and mentorship of women in politics. It seeks to enhance and improve the quality of political participation of women in India.

Angellica Aribam, founder of Femme First Foundation, said:
“India has just 14.3% women in our Parliament and is ranked 145th globally. We have so much to learn from countries that have pushed the boundary for gender equality, and Sweden features on top of that list. The Swedish government prides itself on being the first feminist government in the world. They have almost 50% women representation in their parliament, and that reflects in their policymaking. Through today’s exchange, Indian women in politics learned first-hand from the lived experiences of women MPs of Sweden and forged lasting friendships. It’s one step towards a gender-equal world.”

In the first cohort of the fellowship, there are 18 remarkable women leaders from across the country. They are a mix of women already in elected office, political party office bearers, and civil society leaders who aspire to join politics.

The MPs from Sweden included former Swedish Defence Minister Ms Karin Enström (Moderate Party & Chair of Committee on the Constitution), Ms Camilla Hansén (Green party & Member of Committee on Foreign Affairs), Ms Emilia Töyrä (Social Democratic party & Member of Committee on Social Assurance), and Ms Tina Acketoft (Liberal party & Spokesperson on Constitutional Affairs); some of who had visited India as recently as 2019.

The Swedish MPs engaged in a fireside chat and talked about the benefits of women’s leadership in today’s era, shared their own lived experiences, and what they think of the future in terms of feminist leadership. Further, the Fellows of the program got a chance to have an intimate discussion with the MPs in small groups to share notes about the challenges and achievements of their journeys.

The event was engaging and proved to be beneficial to both the sides. The fellows were well informed and eager to learn more from the experienced Parliamentarians, who in turn were impressed by the questions and enthusiasm of the young women. Their key advice to the aspiring politicians was to look out for each other and support other women, despite different parties and political leanings and alliances.

Sweden Joins The International Solar Alliance

New Delhi: Sweden has ratified and deposited the framework agreement of the International Solar Alliance (ISA), and its Membership of the International Solar Alliance entered into force on 17 July 2021

Speaking about Sweden’s membership, Ambassador Klas Molin said, “Sweden is happy to join the International Solar Alliance. Prime Minister Löfven reiterated to Prime Minister Modi the need for enhanced global cooperation at their last meeting. The creation and development of the ISA as an instrumental framework, in which India plays a leading role, is an important step in this direction. Sweden hopes to bring its expertise and its experience in renewable energy and clean energy technologies to discussions in the ISA and hopes to contribute in meeting the challenges related to climate change.”

Dr. Ajay Mathur, Director General, ISA, said, ” I am extremely delighted to welcome the Kingdom of Sweden. This is the starting point of a strategic partnership between ISA and Sweden. I am sure we can achieve sustainable, equitable and more prosperous future for all through solar energy.”

Team Sweden Stands With India…

New Delhi: Team Sweden – which comprises Swedish government, Swedish industry, businesses, and agencies – has joined forces to help India fight the current devastating Covid-19 surge.

According to Ambassador Klas Molin, “The second wave of Covid has hit hard and close to home, sparing no one. It is a humanitarian crisis and requires to be treated that way. We are working closely with partners in India to get an understanding of what is required on-ground. It is heartening to see so many stepping up to the challenge – from Government and large companies to individuals, including the Indian diaspora community in Sweden. Each contributing to make a difference!”

There are approximately 220 Swedish companies present in India which employ close to 200,000 directly and another 2,200,000 indirectly. Like the rest of the country, almost every company has lost employees, or their family members, to Covid.

The Swedish Chamber of Commerce India (SCCI) has launched an initiative under Kraftsamla (which in Swedish means to join forces), to coordinate all efforts being made locally that can broadly be classified under saving lives, livelihood, prevention and building for the future. Swedish companies are involved in strengthening and assisting local healthcare systems via support to local hospitals with medical equipment like ventilators, oxygen concentrators etc, setting up of Covid-care facilities, infrastructure and technical know-how.

“The second wave of Covid-19 in India has been highly virulent and fast spreading, and this can truly overwhelm the best of administrations or healthcare systems anywhere. It is indeed gratifying to see the willingness and coordinated response of the Swedish companies in supporting lives and livelihoods with an outreach to employees, families, and communities. The Swedish companies are engaged in creating Covid Care Centres, bringing Oxygen Concentrators, Vaccination Campaigns and will continue to do more, together with the local administration,” said Mr. Kamal Bali, Managing Director of Volvo India, Chairperson of SCCI.

The Swedish Chamber is also working with issues around livelihood for migrant workers, women and children, as well as mental health and trauma counselling.

Whilst the Chamber manages efforts in India, the Sweden India Business Council (SIBC) in Stockholm is coordinating with headquarters of Swedish businesses. According to Robin Sukhia, Secretary General & President of SIBC, from Sweden, industry will fund medical supplies, distribution, medical care and support to urban and rural India. This will be done through established Indian NGOs such as Pratham, Indian Red Cross Society and Doctors without Borders, among others, via their Swedish or international organisations. This far the total amount raised outside India is 43 MSEK (5.2 MUSD).

“The rapid and substantial response from Swedish industry to the sad situation in India affecting our friends, families and colleagues was notable and encouraging. The companies and their head offices have mounted a great response to support the medical situation,” said Mr Marcus Wallenberg, Chairman of SEB.

The Swedish Government

Sweden has also donated 200 oxygen concentrators to India. Sweden supports the Indian Red Cross through IFCR (International Federation of Red Cross). The current Swedish support to IFCR is 70 million SEK.

Sweden is the fourth largest contributor to the international vaccine initiative COVAX and has announced an additional support of 1 million doses of the vaccine to COVAX. India is eligible to take part in COVAX.
