Bailou Brings Its World of Craft to Mumbai with Its First Store in Colaba

Mumbai, India, Jan 29: Contemporary handloom label Bailou launched its debut Mumbai store today under the name Bailou Bombay, marking a significant moment for textile and design enthusiasts in the city. The store opened under the leadership of Mira Sagar, in collaboration with Bappaditya Biswas, co-founder of Bailou and one of India’s most respected textile revivalists.

For over two decades, Bailou has been shaping a new vocabulary for Indian textiles—one rooted in heritage yet defined by modernity, geometry, restraint, and experimentation. This design philosophy has earned the label a cult following among architects, artists, cultural consumers, and textile purists who value subtlety over nostalgia.

With today’s launch, Bailou Bombay introduced this quiet, intellectual textile language to Mumbai, bridging Bengal’s contemporary handloom movement with the city’s culturally diverse and design-forward audience.

Reflecting on the launch, Mira Sagar said,

“Bombay absorbs style through culture through cinema, through art, through everyday life. Bringing Bailou here felt intuitive. The brand’s quiet confidence and thoughtful design sensibility resonate deeply with people who don’t need to shout to be seen.”

Founded in Kolkata by Bappaditya and Rumi Biswas, Bailou has long been recognized for pushing the boundaries of Bengal handloom. From reimagining jamdani to experimenting with mulberry silk, cotton, and other regional weaves, the brand has consistently challenged predictability in motif, texture, and silhouette.

Over the years, the label expanded with intention prioritizing cultural integrity, craftsmanship, and design purity over rapid retail growth. Its output spans sarees, garments, yardage, stoles, and home textiles, each treated with the same conceptual rigor and handcrafted precision.

With the opening of Bailou Bombay, Mumbai became only the second city in India to host a standalone Bailou space—cementing its position as a thoughtful destination for those seeking handloom as contemporary design rather than heritage nostalgia.

The store opened today to an audience that included stylists, architects, textile patrons, and members of the cultural community, all drawn to Bailou’s distinct philosophy and modernist approach to Indian craft.
