Aug 19: India is stepping up its development cooperation with Myanmar through new community-focused projects aimed at strengthening disaster preparedness and improving educational infrastructure for young children.
Two Small Development Projects were launched on Wednesday, including a disaster-relief warehouse in Yangon and a pre-primary education facility in Lewe Township of Naypyitaw. The initiatives reflect India’s continued emphasis on projects that address practical needs and create direct benefits for local communities.
Under the Yangon project, a two-storey reinforced-concrete warehouse will be constructed in Dagon Myothit District to store disaster-relief and assistance materials. The facility is expected to improve the local system for storing essential supplies and strengthen preparedness for emergencies.
A separate project in Lewe Township will see the construction of a two-storey pre-primary education building. The facility is expected to provide children with better learning infrastructure and support access to early childhood education.
The education project follows an agreement signed in April during the visit of Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh to Myanmar. The initiative highlights the importance of investing in children and community infrastructure as part of long-term development cooperation.
India’s Small Development Project framework has supported community-level initiatives in Myanmar across sectors including healthcare, education, agriculture, vocational training and infrastructure. Individual projects under the framework can receive Indian grant assistance of up to $2 million.
India has also extended humanitarian and development assistance to Myanmar during periods of crisis, while continuing to support projects designed to strengthen local capacity and improve basic services.
The latest initiatives bring together two important priorities — helping communities prepare better for emergencies and creating stronger foundations for children’s education. By focusing on infrastructure that serves everyday needs, the projects are expected to contribute to more resilient communities and improved social development.
The initiatives further underline India’s commitment to people-oriented development cooperation with Myanmar and its efforts to support projects that can deliver sustainable benefits at the community level.
