Mumbai, Aug 4: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has appointed Monisha Chakraborty as its new Executive Director (ED), effective August 4, entrusting her with oversight of the Foreign Exchange Department and the Financial Markets Regulation Department.
A career central banker with more than three decades of experience, Chakraborty has held several key positions within the RBI across supervision, foreign exchange, and government and bank accounts. Before her elevation, she served as Chief General Manager-in-Charge of the Department of Supervision.
She has also served as Banking Ombudsman and was a member of the technical committee that reviewed the format of the RBI’s Balance Sheet and Profit and Loss Account. Chakraborty holds a degree in Economics and a Master’s degree in Business Economics from the University of Delhi.
Her appointment comes weeks after the RBI named Ravi Shankar as Executive Director. In his current role, Shankar continues to head the Department of Statistics and Information Management, which he previously led as Adviser-in-Charge.
A statistician and career central banker with over 30 years of experience, Shankar has worked in corporate and banking statistics, the government securities market, settlement systems, debt management, and survey-related functions. He has also contributed to several RBI committees and working groups on macroeconomic statistics and policy.
The appointments reflect the central bank’s continued efforts to strengthen its senior leadership across critical regulatory, supervisory, and financial market functions.
