BIF releases a new study mentioning recommendations for the proposed Digital India Act

New Delhi, March 31, 2023 – Broadband India Forum (BIF), an independent policy forum and knowledge-based think-tank released a BIF-commissioned study on “Revising the Information Technology Act 2000” which has been prepared by xKDR Forum, a research and knowledge-based forum as a part of BIF’s Digital Dialogues series. The study report aims at providing recommendations for the revision of certain key sections of the proposed new Digital India Act. The Key highlights of the report were presented at the session which was followed by a panel of esteemed experts deliberating on various vital aspects concerning the revision of the Information Technology Act, 2000.

The Government of India is planning to replace the Information Technology Act, 2000 with the much-touted new legislation, Digital India Act, as part of a broader package of laws concerning the digital ecosystem. As we move towards a Digital India, it becomes imperative that the law promotes trust in the digital ecosystem. This requires careful balancing of multiple interests such as national security and public order, online safety, protection of fundamental rights, and promoting innovation.

In the released report, Rishab Bailey, Visiting Research Fellow, XKDR Forum highlighted how they have examined the proposed law in how it dealt with four focus areas  – online censorship, intermediary liability, surveillance, and cyber security. An important takeaway was the need for improved institutional frameworks to be created – whether to deal with cyber security, establish processes for oversight of surveillance, or indeed, enable fairer content curation decisions and grievance redressal. This move is aimed at ensuring that India has a modern and comprehensive legal framework that is capable of addressing the challenges of the digital age.

The virtual session brought together experts from the Industry, Civil Society, and a Think Tank, to deliberate on the vital aspects of the Information Technology Act, of 2000, and to engage in discussion on various focal points of the proposed revised IT Act.

The Chief Guest, Dr. Rajat Kathuria, amplified that when a nation is racing towards becoming a $5 trillion economy in the coming years, the Digital Act should be able to provide a strong safeguarding framework and balance the interest of all concerned stakeholders.

Mr. TV Ramachandran, President, BIF, said “With over 850 million online users, India boasts of being the  world’s largest digitally connected democracy. So, the need for a robust law provision to safeguard the evolving online landscape becomes a priority. We await the well-articulated evolvable digital law to replace the two-decade-old IT Act.”

Farmers’ Fintech Agreena Raises €46M to Scale the Regenerative Revolution

COPENHAGEN, Denmark Climate and fintech company Agreena, whose soil carbon platform is one of the largest globally, today announced its Series B raise of €46M. Led by Germany’s leading multi-stage investor HV Capital, the round has an exciting composition of new investors including impact fund AENU and fintech-focused Anthemis. The equity raise is also supported by a doubling-down from existing shareholders, including evergreen food investor Gullspång Re:food, well-established tech investor Kinnevik and Denmark’s Export and Investment fund.
The sizable raise comes just one year after the company’s €20M Series A. Since then, Agreena has scaled its activities 10X, expanded its geographic footprint to cover farmland in 16 European countries, and partnered with farms to help them transition more than 600,000 hectares towards climate-positive, regenerative farming.
“In order for the world’s farmers to transition to regenerative agriculture and create a scalable climate impact, the financial rails to support and pay them for it need to be built,” said Simon Haldrup, Co-founder and CEO of Agreena.Agreena is building out technological and financial services infrastructure throughout the agriculture value chain as the industry increasingly becomes a focal point for decarbonisation efforts.”
Momentum around regenerative farming is sweeping the globe, with corporates, governments and supply chains turning their focus to our agricultural soils for carbon removals in order to meet global net-zero targets. Through the adoption of regenerative agriculture practices, farmers will play an increasingly essential role in tackling climate change, food insecurity, and other critical environmental issues. Agreena has developed a way to turn this impact into a new and additional revenue stream for farmers to help finance the transition by leveraging the carbon market.
Via the company’s digital platform, farmers plan, track and validate improvements for their regenerative journey, in the process transitioning from emitting CO2 to drawing CO2 down and storing it within their soils. The improved soil health and biodiversity reduce the need for inputs while enhancing farmers’ resilience to increasingly adverse climate conditions (such as drought or flooding), enhancing the overall operational performance of farms.
On the other side of the equation, Agreena’s certificates and downstream services support climate-focused companies already working to decarbonise, as well as companies in the food supply chain increasingly requiring field-level traceability of their agricultural commodities to comply with Scope 3 reporting requirements.
Scaling with Technology
The recent acquisition of remote sensing company Hummingbird Technologies has enabled Agreena to expand its offering beyond farmers to encompass agridata services for supply chain players, governments and other institutions. Prioritising a science-based and technology-first agenda, Agreena’s platform now incorporates a world-leading, AI-based monitoring and verification solution that utilises satellite imagery, coupled with ground-truth data and machine learning to identify and report on-farm regenerative agriculture practices. Offering global monitoring, the company is on a mission to take the lead in supporting the road to net zero for the full value chain.
“Real climate impact is only created at scale and Agreena is perfectly positioned to distribute their carbon farming capabilities across the globe to bring high-quality, verifiable and nature-based carbon credits to the market. Only with carbon removals, can net zero targets be met,” said Alexander Joel-Carbonell, partner at HV Capital.
From Farmer to Fintech
Deeply rooted within the agricultural community, Agreena was originally founded with seed investment from Danish farmers and agricultural families. The company’s next phase introduces a vertically integrated platform and marketplace. Working first with farmers in the field to monitor the carbon impact, the resulting certificates are constructed into scalable portfolios for corporates, tailored to their unique ESG strategy.
The company is taking a lead in providing the technological rails for the growing market with innovative financial solutions. Examples include using sustainable blockchain technology for enhanced traceability and transparency of carbon credits, and e-money and smart contracts to facilitate payment exchanges between climate-conscious corporates and farmers with immediate reconciliation at scale.
“We are on a journey to remove the economic barriers to adoption of regenerative agriculture for farmers and their entire ecosystem – carbon is just the beginning,” concluded Haldrup.

Aiding Nep 2020 Mission to Transform Education, Gisa Urges India’s Independent Schools to Join Forces

Aiding Nep 2020 Mission to Transform Education, Gisa Urges India’s Independent Schools to Join Forces

The 340,000 plus independent (private)schools across India were today urged to join forces with schools from across the world in the first worldwide representative body for the K-12 independent education sector – the Global Independent Schools Association (GISA). A vital aim of the organisation is in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, to improve education provision throughout the world, in all sectors, by sharing knowledge.

According to recent figures from the World Bank, over 50% of secondary school pupils and 13% of primary school pupils in India are enrolled in an independent institution – whether not for profit, profit, run by a private body such as a non-governmental organization, religious body, special interest group, foundation or business enterprise.

The new body, launched today, with an urgent call for knowledge sharing between the independent sector and governments to help improve education worldwide. Crucially, GISA hopes to make its voice heard as a valued partner in achieving SDG4: ensuring inclusive, equitable, quality education for all by 2030.

This global association seeks to co-ordinate, represent, and give a voice to the global K-12 independent education sector – filling a “representation void” of a sector that educates 350 million children around the world – including 52% of secondary school children in South Asia and 45% of primary school children in Latin America.

“I am delighted to represent Nord Anglia Education, India, and join other providers of international education in India to launch the GISA India Chapter”, said Christopher Short, MD Nord Anglia Education India.“GISA gives us an excellent platform to promote the benefits of international schools in India and highlight how we can work alongside the National system to promote high standards and educate the next generation of leaders”, he added.

GISA aims to become the “go-to” voice for the independent education sector, showcasing its impact and acting as a resource for the world’s governments and global institutions to tap into, talk to, and lean on in times of crisis. It will provide a forum for the sector to share its vast accumulated knowledge and expertise within the independent sector. At the same time, it aims to work with policymakers and governments worldwide to help raise standards in schools of every background, whether public, independent or third sector.

Some of the leading names in global K-12 independent education have united to form this new body. GISA’s Executive Board, which will shape its strategic direction, includes Andrew Fitzmaurice, CEO of Nord Anglia Education; Sunny Varkey, Founder of Gems Education; Nadim Nsouli, Founder, Chairman and CEO of Inspired Education; Frank Maassen; Group CEO of Cognita; Brian Rogove, Group CEO of XCL Education; and Dino Varkey, Group CEO of GEMS Education. The association launched with a call to action to attract members from around the world, whether they are a single classroom private school in a low-income country, a school run by a charity or foundation, or a school operating within a multinational chain.

GISA will enable its members to exchange knowledge, jointly develop resources, and benefit from access to advanced research and reports, as well as innovative workshops and exclusive events. Additionally, the association aims to organise an annual conference where policymakers, sector representatives, non- governmental organisations, and renowned thinkers will come together to engage in high-level discussions on accelerating the achievement of high-quality education for all.

Andrew Fitzmaurice, CEO of Nord Anglia Education and Chairman of the GISA’s Executive Board, said: “Independent schools are often centres of innovation that introduce new methodologies, pedagogic styles, and technologies. GISA members can provide considerable insight and best practice, which can be shared to benefit state and independent schools everywhere. From important areas such as supporting the professional development of teachers to the latest uses of technology in teaching and learning, we can make an even greater impact on education by working together.”

Speaking in support of GISA, Andreas Schleicher, Director of Education and Skills for the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), said: “Getting the independent sector to raise its voice in service of the public good is hugely important. Tomorrow’s economy will be unforgiving for those without a strong education and skills for the future. Unless the independent sector joins others – governments, business, NGOs – to work out how we educate and skill up a new generation, valuable expertise will remain siloed, and solutions will be lost.”

“We are thrilled to announce the launch of GISA in India,” said Francis Joseph, India lead of GISA Global. “With India’srich history of academic excellence and cultural diversity, independent (private) schools in the country can play a critical role in shaping the next generation of leaders and innovators. The deep knowledge across India’s vast network of independent schools can play an important role in helping to improve global education. It is a key responsibility of private school operatorsto work together with governments and policy makers in the country”.

Francis Joseph is known in the Indian education sector for his work with the Government of Maharashtra in establishing a mother-tongue education board, namely Maharashtra International Education Board. He also worked with Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation in establishing free-of-fees schools affiliated to CBSE/ICSE/Cambridge/IB Schools, as well as participating in various education policy decisions such as The Maharashtra Compulsory Teaching and Learning of Marathi Language in Schools Act, 2020.

Role and importance of professional mats in wellbeing of sports player

Role and importance of professional mats in wellbeing of sports playerVaibhav Somani, Director, Gravolite

The ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports received a budget allocation of Rs. 3397.32 crore for FY 2023-24. There was an increase of 11% from the previous year’s budget. This goes to show that India as a nation is giving unprecedented attention to the growth of this sector and the grass-root talent that is available in our country. And to support and nurture this talent, right infrastructure plays a vital role.

Professional mats which is a part of the sports infrasturure, play a crucial role in the well-being of sports players, especially kabbadi players, wrestlers, and kho kho players. Mats provide a safe and comfortable surface for players to perform their physical activities, reducing the risk of injury and promoting overall health. In this article, we will examine the importance of professional mats in the wellbeing of sports players and how they contribute to their safety, performance, and longevity in their respective sports.

Reducing Physical Injuries:

First and foremost, professional mats serve as a protective surface for players, reducing the risk of injury during their physical activities. This is especially important for contact sports like kabbadi and wrestling, where players frequently fall, roll, and engage in high-impact moves. A high-quality mat can absorb the shock of these impacts, reducing the risk of injury to the joints, bones, and muscles. A well-maintained mat can also provide a consistent and stable surface for players, reducing the risk of slips and falls.

Enhanced Performance:

In addition to injury prevention, professional mats can also enhance player performance. A well-designed mat can provide the necessary grip and traction to allow players to move freely and perform their moves with greater precision and control. Mats can also help players conserve energy, as they will not have to exert as much effort to maintain balance and stability on a surface that provides a supportive foundation. Furthermore, the physical comfort that a mat can provide can help reduce fatigue and stress on the body, allowing players to perform longer and with greater intensity.

Enhanced Longetivity:

The longevity of a player’s career can also be positively impacted by the use of professional mats. A safe and supportive surface can reduce the risk of injury, allowing players to continue performing at a high level for a longer period of time. Moreover, a well-designed mat can also help players recover from injury more quickly, as the cushioned surface can reduce the impact of physical therapy and rehabilitation exercises. This can help players get back to playing their sport more quickly, ensuring that they are able to perform at their best for as long as possible.

Grooming of players:
Professional mats became a symbolic part of the sports fraternity. Sports involve extraordinary activities like flipping, falling, running, etc. A professional mat will help in grooming the player, as it will increase the efficiency of the player while playing the sports. A good sports mat train them to play any sports nationally and internationally.

Sports is a platform for some extraordinary performances that include intensive physical activity. Having a quality mat is extremely important to help maintain the balance of players and help them in having the right posture. It has been observed that the percentage of people getting injured due to the non-availability of professional mats and equipment is quite high and some of these injuries are either life threatening or can led to physical disability. A professional mat cushions the body to prevent aches and pain, as well as fatal injuries while performing any sports.

Cymulate Releases Findings from Over One Million Security Assessments and 1.7 Million Hours of Testing

BENGALURU – March 30, 2023 – Cymulate, the leader in cybersecurity risk validation and exposure management, today released the company’s “2022 Cybersecurity Effectiveness Report” which analyzed the results of over a million security posture validation assessments, including 1.7 million hours of offensive cybersecurity testing within Cymulate’s production environments.

The report provides critical insights in global cybersecurity effectiveness, critical findings and top attack tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs). The report delves into the efficacy of different security controls, the most concerning threats as tested by organizations worldwide, and top cybersecurity best practices for 2023.
Report key takeaways include:

• Many organizations are testing for trending threats at the expense of ones they are more likely to experience – organizations are actively testing against threats seen in the news, likely from pressure to report on their exposure risk to emergent threats. This is a good, up to the point where it takes away from assessing threats and exposures that are more likely actively targeting the business. Businesses that used scheduled and full kill-chain testing demonstrated the broadest testing coverage and the most in-depth validation when they added advanced scenario testing to their programs.

• Known and cataloged industry-wide security issues remain unaddressed – 40% of the top 10 CVEs identified most by Vulnerability Management platforms were over two years old yet remain unpatched. A significant number of organizations are not testing against more widely recognized threats such as ProxyNotShell and Emotet that continue to persist and are apt to cause the most harm if not remediated.

• The effectiveness of data protection measures has declined – jumping from 30 to 44 in 2022, the average data exfiltration risk score has worsened considerably. Network and Group Policies have had a positive impact on prevention of data exfiltration, which has driven attackers to resort to alternative exfiltration methods.

• 92% of the top 10 exposures are related to domain and email security – in 2022, the top 10 exposures detected by Cymulate’s External Attack Surface Management (EASM) module showed most detected exposures were spread across domain security (59.3%) and email security (32.8%).

• Breach and Attack Simulation has had a significant positive impact on cyber resiliency

When comparing the anonymized data between the first Endpoint Security assessment completed and the most recent assessments completed, significant improvements in risk reduction were seen when BAS testing was regularly performed. The improvements were seen consistently across customers of various industries and sizes.

“It’s understandable that organizations want to protect themselves against the major threats making headlines today,” said Carolyn Crandall, Chief Security Advocate for Cymulate. “But the findings of the Cybersecurity Effectiveness Report underscore the fact that many attackers aren’t using advanced new strategies—they’re continuing to find success using known tactics. Organizations need to shift their vulnerability management strategies to address these gaps by implementing Attack Surface Management tools for exposure assessment, Breach and Attack Simulation for security control efficacy validation, and Continuous Automated Red Teaming for more frequent penetration testing.”

“Organizations must understand their security posture to identify vulnerabilities and protect against cyber threats,” said David Neuman, senior analyst at TAG Cyber. “Cymulate’s release of findings from over one million security assessments and 1.7 million hours of testing provides valuable insights into common weaknesses and areas for improvement in cybersecurity. This data highlights the need for continuous security testing and risk assessments to stay ahead of emerging threats.”

Students of MRG School Create Sensorial Park

students

The students of MRG School’s Cambridge wing have set another benchmark as they built a ‘Sensorial Park’ under their Geo Inquiry Project. A group of 35-40 students built the park with the help of household items and other discarded stuff. The project was a part of the international curriculum that the school follows, apart from the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). The park was made of collected and created trash as an ode to the environment.

This eco-friendly park can be touched and felt and has depictions of multiple themes, including creating melodies (musical instruments) and household items. The aim of the project was to give back to the environment as much as we receive, and, hence, the project was composed of reusable products. Students set the example of maintaining ecological balance through this project.

“The ‘Geo Inquiry Project’ is aimed to nurture the learners’ capacity to make a meaningful contribution to the community and society. The ‘Sensory Park’ was created entirely out of the trash, and our students have done wonders in the project. This was our way to sensitise people and effectively encourage waste prevention, reuse and recycling behaviours in our society. This park is not only a valuable addition to our school but has also boosted the students’ self-assurance and sense of ownership,” said Ms. Anshu Mital, Principal, MRG School.
