Scotland’s space sector set to become greenest on Earth

Ambitious plans unveiled to reduce sector’s environmental impact with publication of new Scottish Space Sustainability Roadmap

Edinburgh, 6th September 2022 – Scotland’s space sector today declares its commitment to reducing its impact on the environment through the publication of a new sustainable space roadmap, the first of its kind on Earth.

The new roadmap sets out the steps needed to achieve the long-term goals of Scottish space missions, which are to be space debris neutral, zero emissions created from on-the-ground activities, and for Scotland to gain global recognition as a leader in sustainable space.

National and international expert interviews, in-depth study into other sustainability initiatives and consultation with the space industry informed the roadmap contents, which addresses areas such as the environmental impacts of building, fuelling, and launching satellites, as well as the importance of promoting satellite data for environmental monitoring.

Business Minister Ivan McKee said: “Scotland’s space industry has enormous growth potential and is rightly recognised as a key new market opportunity within the Scottish Government’s National Strategy for Economic Transformation. Last year, the Scottish Government and partners set out our collective ambition for Scotland to become Europe’s leading space nation, taking a £4 billion share of the global space market and creating 20,000 jobs by 2030.

“The Scottish Government recognises the key role of space in the global fight against climate change. The Scottish space sector shares this collective responsibility and is already innovating through the use of greener fuels, lightweight materials, smart design and reusability. The Scottish Space Sustainability Roadmap is the next step in helping the sector reach net zero by 2045 and in setting an example for other nations.

“These are exactly the kind of actions necessary to help boost productivity, create sustainable jobs and position Scotland in the vanguard of responsible users of space across every part of the industry.”

Developed in collaboration with Space Scotland’s Environmental Task Force and funded by Scottish Enterprise, the roadmap has been produced by space strategy firm AstroAgency in partnership with Glasgow-based Optimat.

Jane Martin, managing director at Scottish Enterprise, said: “It’s almost a year since Glasgow hosted COP26, where world leaders gathered to address climate change and the global action needed. This roadmap represents another historic moment in our journey towards net zero and is further proof of Scotland’s commitment to take positive environmental action.

“By working together, industry, academia and the public sector can find solutions to the worldwide challenge of making space more sustainable, helping to protect the Earth and space for future generations.”

Kristina Tamane, Space Sector Business Development Lead at University of Edinburgh and Environmental Task Force Co-Chair, said: “The work behind this roadmap is unique because it is centred in action and leading the way globally in terms of sustainability of the whole space sector.

“Key colleagues across the UK, enabled by the Environmental Task Force, will proactively and consistently build a space sector that is sustainability focussed by design – working collaboratively and internationally to achieve this ambitious goal. This is a truly historic document which I am positive will lead to an environmentally conscious space sector development, led by Scotland.”

As one of the early actions identified in the roadmap, Scottish Enterprise, together with partners Scottish Government and The Data Lab, has launched a £300,000 innovation challenge to fund innovative solutions using space data to aid Scotland’s transition to net zero. Successful applications will secure funding of between £20,000 and £30,000 with the fund closing for applications on 26 September 2022.

Dr Paul Bate, Chief Executive of the UK Space Agency, said: “Scotland is a vital part of the UK’s growing space sector, which employs 47,000 people and generates an annual income of £16.5 billion. We welcome the new sustainable space roadmap, which is a strong statement of intent to reduce environmental impact.

“The UK is taking a global lead on space sustainability. We’re developing new missions and capabilities to improve how we track objects in orbit and accelerate technologies such as active debris removal, while setting new standards and working closely with international partners to keep space open for future generations.

 “We’re also backing missions to help monitor and tackle climate change, such as the UK-built Biomass satellite, which will measure carbon stored by the world’s forests, and the new FORUM mission, which will provide unique measurements of our planet’s infra-red energy to improve our understanding of our climate.”

Scotland’s ambitious space sector is identified by the Scottish Government and its enterprise agencies as a key opportunity for future economic growth. The Scottish Space Strategy, published last October, aims to create 20,000 jobs and secure a £4 billion share of the global space market.

With this growth comes an accompanying responsibility to mitigate the environmental impacts of the space sector, and in 2019 industry group, Space Scotland, established an Environmental Task Force working group, comprising around 20 representatives from the space sector, to better understand the true impact of the space industry on both Earth and Low Earth orbit.

Last year the Environmental Task Force ran an initiative to gather environmental challenges for space to solve from schools, environmental groups and government agencies. The initiative led to an online showcase of how space could contribute to net zero ambitions

Today’s roadmap announcement comes ahead of two major industry events, Space Comm in the UK and International Astronautical Congress in France where a deep dive of the roadmap will be presented to an international audience. Space Scotland will be looking to energise the debate and collaborate, with the support and endorsement of the UK Space Agency, to engage with international partners and leaders to ensure sustainability is at the forefront of growth.

From blowfish and biscuits to sheep’s head and beer, global marketers’ techniques are revealed

06 September 2022

From toxic Japanese blowfish and Norwegian sheep’s head to Italian breakfast biscuits and Middle Eastern hummus, experts have created a new way of classifying how foods are marketed around the world.

‘Transcultural food marketing’ takes into account the origin and cultural appeal of foods, organising brands and cuisines into a range of categories such as ‘scary and strange’, ‘treat or threat’ or ‘routine simplicity’.

An international team of researchers analysed over 30 years of research insights to create a new understanding of how growers and producers, wholesalers and retailers, chefs and marketers engage with cultural diversity.

Publishing their findings in Journal of Business Research, researchers, from the University of Birmingham, Monash University, Australia, and Universidad del Desarrollo, Chile, pitch a range of foods on two related scales: ‘Territorialisation to Deterritorialisation’ and ‘Familiarity to Exploration’.

The former considers how strongly a food’s geographical origin influences its marketing – for example champagne or Kobe beef, whilst the latter factors familiarity, or lack of – for example curry or molecular gastronomy.

Co-author Pilar Rojas Gaviria, from the University of Birmingham, commented: Food products’ relationship to place can combine ethnic, national, and global cultures to shape the consumer’s experience in very different ways.

Transcultural food marketing creates a new understanding of how marketers curate these relationships to boost sales of their products. They can choose to emphasise products’ geographical ties or explore feelings of comfort or danger associated with the food.”

In deciding how to market a food’s origin, marketers face a dilemma – do they anchor a product to a specific place (eg. champagne) or do they draw on a wider cultural association to broaden its appeal (eg. Tiger beer).

When translating foods across cultures, marketers must balance familiarity, which could give a product broader public appeal (eg. McDonalds), with exploration, which could draw consumers through a sense of novelty and adventure (eg. Smalahove – salted, smoked and cooked sheep’s head).

The researchers used a range of global foods and cuisines, including Mulino Blanco biscuits, Starbucks Coffee, Inca Kola and Nikkei Cuisine, to illustrate the new framework.

Transcultural food marketing draws four categories within the spectrum of ‘Territorialisation to Deterritorialisation’:

  • Anchored territorialisation: rooting food to place – the place of origin forms a vital connection with the character of the product, for example wine from Châteauneuf-du-Pape vineyards around the Pope’s residence in Avignon, France;
  • Hybrid territorialisation: connecting cuisines – different culinary traditions are simultaneously recombined and honoured in a food product, for example Inca Kola as a Peruvian-US ‘mash-up’;
  • Virtual territorialisation: neither here nor there – the need for a food product to carry familiar resonances without emptying it of cultural meaning, for example the British invented the cultural category of curry as a simplified icon of Indian food; and
  • Aerial territorialisation: obscuring and imagining cultural baggage – unmooring a food product from a specific locale toward more abstract global consumer cultures, for example hummus, which can be ‘claimed’ by several Middle Eastern countries.

The framework draws a further four categories within ‘Familiarity to Exploration’:

  • Everyday staples: routine simplicity – a safe, regular part of a consumer’s diet, for example Mulino Bianco constructing the mythology of the Italian family breakfast and pitching its products as part of this;
  • Commodified cosmopolitanism: the extraordinary within the ordinary – a touch of the exotic without losing accessibility, for example hamburgers, pasta and coffee.
  • Gourmet innovation: treat or threat – a novel and uncanny charm through a curated dalliance with strangeness, for example deep-fried moss or live ant dishes from chef René Redzepi at Noma’s; and
  • Mystification: scary and strange – a mysterious and adventurous aura that is separate from mainstream food practices, for example Fugu blowfish which can only be prepared by specially licensed chefs because toxins within the fish’s body can be lethal.

San Francisco, US, Is the Best City for Startups, With an Overall Score of 550

Data from StockApps.com reveals that San Francisco, US is the best city for startups, with an overall score of 550.

What makes San Francisco so startup-friendly? For one, the city has a long history of tech innovation. And today, the city is home to more than 8,000 tech startups. The second-ranked city, New York, earned an overall score of 217.

Commenting on the report, StockApps’ Edith Reads said. “San Francisco and New York remain top spots as the best places for a startup to flourish. Because of its overall score, San Francisco is the “supernova” of startup ecosystems. New York City should be commended for continuing to have the world’s second-best startup ecosystem, as it was last year.”

Why San Fransisco Stands Out

San Fransisco’s proximity to Silicon Valley contributes to the presence of many skilled people inside its borders. There is a culture of innovation, talented engineers, high-quality institutions, venture investors, and entrepreneurs. New technology companies heavily influence the culture of doing business in San Francisco. The people who work in this industry collaborate on moving it ahead by exchanging ideas. Because of this, it is the perfect place to call home if you fancy new technologies.

Favourite Startups

Regarding growth and innovation, the software and data industries stand out as the frontrunners. The social and leisure technology sector is the most dynamic, following the software sector. Conversely, the e-commerce and retail technology sector has fewer startups.

Technology in the financial and medical fields are two more dynamic sectors with enormous growth potential. Financial technology (FinTech) has already begun to change how we interact with our finances. In the medical sector, mobile health (mHealth) startups are working to make it easier for us to track and improve our health. The full story and statistics can be found here: San Francisco, US, Is the Best City for Startups, With an Overall Score of 550

Product innovation va-Q-one 300P thermal transport container impresses with superior weight-to-payload ratio

Würzburg, September 6th, 2022. Pharmaceuticals, infectious samples, test materials for clinical trials and many other products for temperature-controlled logistics must arrive at their destination in perfect condition. Especially for shipments to regions without the possibility of return transport, there is a great demand for a passively temperature-controlled transport container in the size of a Euro pallet with as much usable volume as possible, which enables this perfect condition. With the va-Q-one 300P, va-Q-tec is expanding its va-Q-one portfolio of thermal transport solutions in September 2022. Moreover, with six sizes to choose from, most customer requirements can now be met.

The high-performance insulation in the new va-Q-one 300P allows maximum internal volume on the limited size of the Euro pallet while being able to maintain the specific temperature for the longest time possible. In the three temperature ranges offered, 15 to 25 °C, 2 to 8 °C and -15 to -25 °C, the temperature can be kept stable for at least 100 hours, and up to 200 hours in more moderate outdoor conditions. Due to this stable performance even under extreme conditions, the solution is primarily optimized for international shipping. The va-Q-one 300P is also suitable for domestic transport in large countries with a less developed infrastructure.

The side walls of the new box are completely lined with vacuum insulation panels (VIPs). VIPs insulate around ten times better than conventional materials of the same insulation thickness. The narrow side walls make optimum use of the dimensions of the standard pallet. In addition, the combination with temperature elements, so-called phase change materials, keeps the temperature 100 hours stable in the respective standard temperature range of 15 to 25 °C, 2 to 8 °C or -15 to -25 °C, qualified according to ISTA 7D summer and winter temperature profiles.

For the new va-Q-one 300P, the developers paid particular attention to working with very lightweight materials. This results in a particularly low ratio of weight to volume of 0.22 kg/l in the temperature range between 2 and 8 °C to a maximum of 0.31 kg/l in the temperature range between -15 and -25 °C. The lower this ratio, the lower the subsequent transport costs for the user. At the same time, a very low CO2 footprint is achieved due to the low weight.

The robust and compact design makes it possible to transport three va-Q-one 300P boxes side by side in a standard truck. The dimensions of a Euro pallet are not exceeded. Although the pallet is part of the product, the box is not permanently attached to the pallet – it can be reused later by the recipient. The height of the va-Q-one 300P is designed for transport in a narrow-body aircraft and is therefore also very compact.

In the va-Q-one 300P, the new phase change material (PCM) va-Q-pad +05G EL is used for the temperature range between 2 and 8 °C. The use of gelled PCM reduces the overall weight of the va-Q-one 300P compared to liquid PCM and thus normally also reduces the overall cost of the shipment. Because of the gelled, and therefore solid, PCM, no liquid can leak into the load even if the outer shell is damaged.

“With the new solution in the va-Q-one 300P pallet size, we want to support shipments to regions from where no return transport is possible – for example return transport of our rental containers and boxes. Thereby we support the delivery of medicines and pharmaceuticals to these countries. At the same time, with this product innovation we show that va-Q-tec stands for safety, cost efficiency and sustainability,” explains Dr. Joachim Kuhn, CEO and founder of va-Q-tec.
