The food safety and standards authority of India (FSSAI) has issued regulations connected to recycled plastic material as food contact material. The food authority in this regard has equipped a draft to amend the packaging materials.

As per the food safety and standards (packaging) amendment regulations, 2022, this draft will make a way for the use of recycled plastic, once it was notified in the gazette.

Under these mandates, products formed with the use of recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) may be used for packaging, storing, carrying or dispensing of food products as and when standards and guidelines are notified by the Food Authority.

This provision will substitute the sub clause (e) pertaining to plastic materials considered to commence contact with food products, under the clause 4 related to particular requirements for primary food packaging regulations.

As per the draft, the packaging materials shall also comply with any other national standards/ regulations as applicable. Currently, FSSAI has initiated this draft related to the usage of recycled plastics for the purpose of packaging by the food industry.

The guidelines related to the recycling process of transforming post-consumer PET bottles utilized for packaging of food-grade recycled resins applicable for preparing bottles and packaging material for bottling or packaging and its testing. The guidelines also cover the acceptance criteria for using food upgrade recycled PET resin material in bottling or packaging operations.

A rare condition prohibits child from swallowing food

A rare condition prohibits child from swallowing food

19-year-old, Razia Khatoon (name changed) has been successfully operated for throat disease in a private hospital in the metropolis. Razia had been suffering from a rare disease called ‘Achalasia Cardia’ since she was 3 years old. As a result of this condition, she was unable to swallow any solid food. Razia’s distressed parents looked up for help from doctors at Amri Hospital, Mukundapur, Kolkata. After a streenous surgery, doctors successfully operated Razia, so she will now be able to eat solid food.

Doctors said that Razia had been suffering from ‘Achalasia Cardia’ since birth. He said that usually when a person swallows food, the sphincter (valve-like structure) found in the lower part called Lower Esophageal Sphincter, of the food pipe opens and allows the food to go into the stomach. Nerve cells control the opening and closing of the sphincter.

The doctors said that in people who suffer from Achalasia Cardia, their nerve cells gradually disappear. The LES fails to relax during swallowing which prohibits food from transferring into the stomach. As a result, food starts collecting in the food pipe. This leads to difficulty in swallowing food, vomiting and weight loss.

Dr. Sanjay Mandal, who performed the surgery on the girl, said, ‘Razia and her parents had visited the hospital first from the treatment. After the medical tests, it was found that the girl had Achalasia Cardia, which occurs in one in two million children. This was the second major operation this girl underwent in 14 years’. Dr. Sanjay Mandal and Dr. Subashish Saha of Amri Hospital, Mukundpur carried out this successful operation. It is known that the first operation of the girl was done in the year 2008 by Dr. Subashish Saha. This time the matter was more complicated and the risks were also high. Despite this, Dr. Sanjay Mandal and Dr. Subashish Saha performed the surgery for the second time. Dr. Sanjay Mandal said that now Razia is relieved and will be able to eat food without any difficulty.

All India Netaji Subhash Vichar Foundation, support

All India Netaji Subhash Vichar Foundation stretched its support to save the life of a 5 months old child

All India Netaji Subhash Vichar Foundation has taken up an initiative to save a 5 months old boy Ayush Das who is suffering from Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type-1(SMA-type1). Spinal Muscular Atrophy is a genetic (inherited) neuromuscular disease that causes muscles to become weak and waste away. People with SMA lose a specific type of nerve cell in the spinal cord (called motor neurons) that control muscle movement. Without these motor neurons, muscles don’t receive nerve signals that make muscles move.  It can only be administered to children below the age of two to arrest the progression of the disease. Social worker, Founder & Trustee of All India Netaji Subhash Vichar Foundation, Mr. Indranil Bhattacharya has raised and placed the issue in the national platform so that the family gets relief as early as possible.

A drug named Zolgensma which costs Rs 16 crore can save this little boy’s life. It is important to note that Zolgensma isn’t marketed in India, and has to be imported from the US if prescribed by a medical practitioner.

“All India Netaji Subhash Vichar Foundation started its journey with unabated social goals and is still working on the same. The initiative to “Save Ayush” is solely one of the major works right now. Youth of today needs to explore the life of Subhash Bose as an unshakeable and indomitable spirit to pave a strong path for the nation towards progress and prosperity with enlightened people in its heart. We would be reaching out to big corporate houses who can use their CSR funds to ensure a child’s life is not lost due to lack of funds”, said Indranil Bhattacharya, Founder & Trustee, All India Netaji Subhash Vichar Foundation.

Ayush’s parents tried all the possible ways to save this little boy’s life. It’s not easy to face these challenges or get the relevant treatment for anyone so easily. All India Netaji Subhash Vichar Foundation has stretched their support to reach out to wider and relevant platforms so that a life is not lost at such an early age.

Sayan Goswami, Trustee All India Netaji Subhash Vichar Foundation & Arnab Chakrabarty, Trustee, All India Netaji Subhas Vichar Foundation said, “All India Netaji Subhash Vichar Foundation is established solely aiming at the inculcation of the uncompromising ideologies of Netaji in the mind of today’s youth. The Foundation belongs to the whole country and to make this work we have to help each other.”
