Huawei and Industry Partners Jointly Release the 5GDN@Smart Grid White Paper

Huawei, in collaboration with other 5G Deterministic Networking Alliance (5GDNA) members such as the China Southern Power Grid, Guangdong Planning and Designing Institute, Global Energy Internet Research Institute, State Grid Qingdao Electric Supply Company, Beijing Sifang Automation, NARI
Group Corporation, China Mobile, China Telecom, and China Unicom, recently released the 5GDN@Smart Grid White Paper: Requirements, Technologies, and Practices.

This marks the first comprehensive analysis into how 5G Deterministic Networking (5GDN) empowers diverse industries through detailed, quantitative interpretations on specific use cases. The white paper not only delves into the methodology behind accelerating the commercial use of 5G smart grids but also serves as a reference for carriers to get their network capabilities ready in advance, aiming to provide both an industry consensus on 5G smart grids as well as a baseline for the 5GDN requirements of the electric power industry according to the joint efforts of the 5GDNA members from grid corporations,
electric power terminal providers, application providers, system integrators, telecom carriers, and network equipment providers.

This white paper is featured in the “5GDN Industry White Paper” series. It quantitatively discusses the key 5GDN requirements of smart grids using specific cases, based on the 5GDN 3D model, which features differentiated capabilities, a dedicated network, and DIY operations. It not only explores the key technologies and solutions that can fulfil these key requirements but also analyzes the results of the field Proof of Concept (PoC) test, aiming to prove that digital transformation is feasible for smart grids and energy Internet industries.

2020 will be the first year to launch 5G business to business (B2B) services for commercial use in China, promoted by 3GPP R16 standards alongside the E2E networking slicing standards set by the China Communications Standards Association (CCSA), as well as the construction of the 5G Standalone (SA) network for three major carriers in China. B2B services greatly differ from business to consumer (B2C) services in that they require a deterministic network to ensure service quality in terms of latency, jitter, and packet loss rate (PLR). To achieve such a network, 5GDN leverages network slicing and Multi-access
Edge Computing (MEC) technologies on the basis of three 5G network highlights: enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB), ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC), and Massive Machine-Type Communications (mMTC). These highlights meet the core service availability, security, reliability, and management requirements of the electric power industry while giving rise to new, ubiquitous, flexible, and high-quality technologies at a low cost for terminal access networks of the power communication system. Such technologies will allow the electric power industry to be the first to experience the commercial use of 5G B2B services.

Professor Liu Jianming, Director of the Expert Committee on “Smart Grid Technology and Equipment” at the Industry Development Promotion Center of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) in China, Leader of the D2-5G Work Team of the CIGRE Chinese National Committee, and member of the 5GDNA Expert Committee, stated that electric power is a fundamental industry for the national economy and people’s livelihood. He went on to add that electric power is extremely sensitive to network latency, jitter, security isolation, SLA/QoS, management, and O&M. An opportunity, therefore, arises to view the application of 5GDN in the electric power industry, in order to demonstrate how
5G can drive the digital transformation of a variety of industries.

Since its foundation in June 2019, 5GDNA has led the industry by attracting over 100 members devoted to researching smart grid technology and development. Based on 5GDN, the alliance has released multiple smart grid industry white papers and participated in a series of cross-industry collaborations. All these achievements showcase the 5GDN applications in smart grids seen in the State Grid and China Southern Power Grid, and also serve as a crucial starting point to initiate a 3GPP R18 project on 5G smart grid standards.

As a single network supporting differentiated operations, 5GDN will inevitably become a significant infrastructure to drive digital transformation across all sectors, including the electric power industry. Working together with new information technologies, such as cloud and artificial intelligence, 5GDN will be crucial to the realization of a 5G-based, digital, smart society.

Fr. P. Christie S.J., Director, XLRI-Xavier School of Management, Jamshedpur, welcomed the new batch of students of both the campuses. In his welcome address, he emphasized on the four essential hallmarks of Jesuit education. Elaborating on the four themes, he said, “XLRI’s successful growth over seven decades has been guided by these four important hallmarks of Jesuit education, and we will continue to place a strong emphasis on them. The first aspect being ‘Excellence’ – to strive continuously for the best, without getting easily satisfied and without becoming complacent with our achievements; the second aspect being ‘Integrity coupled with Ethics’ – which describes the ethos of XLRI. One cannot achieve excellence, long-term success without Integrity & Ethics, both go hand in hand; the third aspect relates to ‘Whole person growth across quotients’ – Growth of an individual across intellectual, social, emotional and spiritual levels; and the fourth hallmark being ‘Social Consciousness’-to be sensitive to the needs of the less privileged around us.”

While addressing the students Fr. P. Christie S.J., Director, XLRI-Xavier School of Management, Jamshedpur said, “It’s the first time in the history of XLRI that we have the inauguration online due to the extraordinary circumstances created by Covid-19 outbreak. With all classes online, this term will be a new experience for all of us. We are doing everything possible to provide you with a similar learning experience as in the classroom. However, we look forward to seeing your bubbly selves on the campus as soon as MHRD and the local district administration give us the green signal. Excellence and Ethics are important elements of XLRI’s DNA and is passed on to every student of the institution. One of the goals of XLRI is to produce women and men for others, people with great sensitivity to the needs of the poor and the disadvantaged and the marginalized. We need to be conscious of the needs of the underprivileged sections of our society in our decision making as business leaders so that we can work for the inclusive and sustainable growth of India”.

“We are happy that we have a new campus in the Delhi-NCR area. One of the reasons for going to Delhi is the growing demand for more business leaders triggered by the economic growth in India. These extension campuses, from its very inception, were conceived as ‘an integral part’ of XLRI Jamshedpur. Our two campuses remain part of the same registered society, the same governing board, and have the same treasurer for all the campuses. Our institutional strategy visualizes both Jamshedpur and Delhi campuses as two entities of the same XLRI institutional brand, and the students of both the campuses belong to the one and only XLRI”, he further added.

The new students will be taken through a Special Orientation Programme drawn up by XLRI to update their knowledge before regular classes commence. This year the Orientation program will be conducted on a virtual platform.

Every year the first-year students of XLRI undergo compulsory Village Exposure Programme and the Outbound Adventure Programme. Both programs have been specially designed for students to create awareness about the realities of rural India and foster a sense of team spirit. This year due to the pandemic, it would not be possible to organize these programs.

Can-Helper: India’s first toll-free emotional support helpline for cancer patients and their families

11th August 2020, Mumbai: Cancer patients and their families in Mumbai and Pune can now dial into Can-Helper – a first-of-its-kind toll-free helpline to provide support for fear, anxiety and stress-related to cancer. This service, operated by experienced counsellors, is available on a toll-free number 09511948920 on all days of the week from 10 am to 6 pm in English, Hindi and Marathi.

Whilst cancer impacts the emotional wellbeing of all patients, it is estimated that one out of every three cancer patients requires interventions to address their emotional distress- the most common problems being anxiety and depression 1. These psychosocial problems have become even more acute in COVID due to lack of continuity of care, reduced social support, increased financial burden from loss of jobs etc.

Can-Helper (Cancer Helpline for Emotional Respite) is launched by Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai and Cipla Palliative Care & Training Centre Pune in association with the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) and Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to address the specific psychosocial needs of cancer patients and their caregivers, especially those in an advanced stage of the disease.

ELGi’s AB ‘Always Better’ Series powers the Indian pharmaceutical industry

India’s leading pharmaceutical companies rely on the ELGi ((BSE: 522074 NSE: ELGIEQUIP)) AB series range of oil-free screw compressors, to deliver pure, clean, class “0” oil-free air. With high reliability, consistent air quality, better return on investment, lower cost of ownership, and fast, efficient service support for sensitive applications with moisture content between +3°C, to -20°C PDP; the AB series range of air compressors meets the ISO 8573–1 compliance requirements. In addition, the ELGi AB Series delivers unmatched air quality in line with the ISO8573-Class 7 compliance norms ensuring zero traces of microbial contaminants. With the IS:10500:2012 certification for water quality, the AB series also guarantees the safest pneumatic air for the pharmaceutical industry. The sheer performance of the ELGi AB Series, coupled with its compelling value proposition has resulted in India’s leading pharmaceutical companies replacing existing machines with the AB series, while successful installations have prompted pharmaceutical companies, across the country, to revisit their entire fleet of air compressors.

India’s pharmaceutical industry is forecasted to grow at 22.4% annually, to the US $100 billion by 2025; addressing over 50% of the global demand for vaccines, 40% of generic demand in the US and 25% of all medical requirements in the UK. Dr. Jairam Varadaraj, Managing Director, Elgi Equipments Ltd said “In light of the pandemic, India’s pharmaceutical industry has a tremendous opportunity to play a pivotal role in global healthcare. With growing FDA scrutiny, strict warnings over toxic impurities and delicate pharmaceutical manufacturing processes, the quality of compressed air meeting the highest standards, is of quintessential importance. On the other hand, continuous air supply must be guaranteed, since a disruption can lead to an immense loss of production. At ELGi, we endeavoured to address the needs of the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry in a new way. The ELGi AB ‘Always Better’ series is a disruption in oil-free compressed air technology, and we’re delighted to witness its growing adoption as the customer’s choice for sensitive pharmaceutical applications.”

Pharmaceutical customers traditionally buy oil-lubricated compressors for requirements below 500cfm (90kW) owing to low capital investments, and conventional oil-free compressors, to meet stringent air quality requirements. The flip side of using lubricated screws is the multi-layer filtration systems which increase pressure drop and cause downtime due to the replacement of oil filters resulting in increased lifecycle costs. On the other hand, conventional oil-free compressors in this range, are normally air-cooled and also face reliability issues and temperature trips at high ambient temperature conditions (above 45°C), resulting in significant downtime and operational losses, in addition to excessive initial and running costs.

The ELGi AB Series is the #Always better choice; offering pharmaceutical manufacturing customers reliability and high performance at temperatures beyond 50°C due to the water injection inside the compression chamber. The AB Series delivers Class ‘0’ quality air, while the water in the closed circuit is insulated with a proprietary material to ensure zero contamination due to corrosion.

The ELGi AB Series has a unique air cooling system which ensures ample condensation of water from air particles, aiding the self-replenishment of water in the closed-loop. This eliminates the need for external water top-up and also reduces the load on the driers and the water management system. The in-built microbial inhibition system prevents microbial growth, across all scenarios of operation, thereby ensuring microbe-free air.

The ELGi AB Series operates with a single airend, as opposed to conventional oil-free machines that operate with dual airends. This results in lower footprint, fewer rotating components and lower maintenance costs. Fitted with stainless steel rotors for better performance, every ELGi AB series air compressor comes with standard bearings for ease of maintenance. Additionally, the AB series range operates at a lower RPM, resulting in less wear and tear of rotating parts, low noise levels and reduced power consumption. Additionally, the low noise levels ensure the AB series does not require a dedicated compressor room and can be placed right next to the application area, thereby reducing costs involved with the build-up of additional infrastructure and compressed air supply systems.

Mr. Rajesh Premchandran, Director, ISAAME (India, South Asia, Africa and the Middle East) said, “The AB Series is a disruption in oil-free compressed air technology, offering pharmaceutical customers a no-compromise, oil-free solution at reduced lifecycle costs when compared with prevailing oil-free technologies. With the AB Series compressors, pharmaceutical installations get the purest form of compressed air with higher efficiency, increased reliability and quicker return on investment.”
