Jan 10: Hair loss is a common problem that affects many people, especially as they age. However, sometimes hair loss can be caused or worsened by hormonal imbalances in the body. Hormones are chemical messengers that regulate various functions and processes, such as growth, metabolism, reproduction, and mood. When hormones are out of balance, they can affect the health and growth of your hair.
Some of the common causes of hormonal hair loss are:
- Stress: Stress can increase the production of cortisol, a hormone that can trigger the production of testosterone and dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which are hormones that can shrink hair follicles and cause hair loss.
- Thyroid disorders: The thyroid gland produces hormones that control the metabolism and energy levels of the body. When the thyroid is underactive (hypothyroidism) or overactive (hyperthyroidism), it can cause hair loss by affecting the hair growth cycle and the quality of the hair.
- Pregnancy and childbirth: During pregnancy, the levels of estrogen and progesterone increase, which can stimulate hair growth and prevent hair shedding. However, after giving birth, these hormone levels drop rapidly, which can cause a sudden increase in hair shedding, known as postpartum hair loss. This is usually temporary and resolves within a few months.
- Menopause: During menopause, the levels of estrogen and progesterone decline, which can reduce the hair growth phase and increase the hair shedding phase. This can also make the hair more susceptible to the effects of DHT, which can cause thinning and balding of the hair.
Medications and birth control pills: Some medications, such as antidepressants, blood thinners, steroids, and chemotherapy drugs, can cause hair loss as a side effect by interfering with the hormone balance or the hair growth cycle. Birth control pills can also affect hormone levels and cause hair loss in some women, especially those who are sensitive to androgens.
If you are experiencing hair loss due to hormonal imbalance, there are some alternative therapies that you can try to restore your hormone balance and improve your hair health. Some of these are:
- Medicines: Your healthcare provider may prescribe drugs such as Minoxidil or Finasteride to combat hair loss due to hormonal imbalance. Minoxidil is a topical solution that stimulates blood flow to the scalp and prolongs the growth phase of the hair. Finasteride is an oral medication that blocks the conversion of testosterone to DHT and prevents hair follicle shrinkage. These drugs may have some side effects, such as irritation, itching, swelling, or sexual dysfunction, so consult your doctor before using them.
- Lifestyle changes: A balanced diet, regular exercise, adequate sleep, and stress management can help you maintain a healthy hormone balance and prevent hair loss. Eating foods that contain vitamins, minerals, and proteins, such as eggs, spinach, berries, fish, sweet potatoes, nuts, seeds, and avocados, can significantly aid hair health. Exercising can help you reduce stress and improve blood circulation to the scalp. Sleeping for at least 7-8 hours a night can help you regulate your hormone levels and repair your body tissues. Managing stress can help you lower your cortisol levels and prevent excessive production of DHT.
- Herbs: Some herbs are very helpful in blocking the 5 alpha reductase enzyme and therefore, blocking excessive DHT production. These include Saw Palmetto, Pygeum, and Nettles. These herbs can be taken as supplements or applied topically as oils or extracts. They may have some interactions with other medications or conditions, so consult your doctor before using them.
- Essential oils: Some essential oils have anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antibacterial, antioxidant, and stimulating properties that can benefit your scalp and hair health. Some of these oils are lavender oil, rosemary oil, peppermint oil, tea tree oil, cedarwood oil, and thyme oil. You can mix a few drops of these oils with a carrier oil such as coconut oil or jojoba oil and massage them into your scalp for 10-15 minutes before washing your hair. You can also add them to your shampoo or conditioner for extra benefits.
Hormonal hair loss can be frustrating and distressing, but it is not irreversible. By identifying the cause of your hormonal imbalance and trying some alternative therapies, you can restore your hormone balance and improve your hair health.
However, it is important to consult your doctor before starting any treatment or making any changes to your diet or lifestyle.
