Don’t neglect your eye health this summer!

Don’t neglect your eye health this summer!

Hyderabad, April 2023: As summer approaches, we tend to prioritize drinking plenty of water and staying hydrated while also taking extra care of our health, skin, and hair. However, we often overlook the health of our eyes. To prevent permanent damage to our eyes and vision during summer, experts from the L V Prasad Eye Institute offer important tips for good eye health.

The intense heat of the sun and the high level of pollutants in the air can make our eyes susceptible to infections, redness, itching and inflammation. In summer, there is more dust, pollen, and several other substances in the air, which can elicit eye allergies (allergens). Dust mites (small insects) thrive in numbers during summer, and their residue can spread in the air and elicit an allergic response in the eyes. Moreover, due to hot and dry climate, the tear film on the eye gets evaporated faster, causing a burning sensation and irritation in the eyes. This becomes more prominent in patients with dry eyes.

Dr Akhil Bevara from the Kallam Anji Reddy Campus of L V Prasad Eye Institute in Hyderabad advice, “During the summer season, we see a surge in cases of conjunctivitis (red/pink eye), eye allergies, dry eyes and other eye infections and redness. Intense exposure to ultraviolet rays during summer can harm the eyes in several ways. It can lead to the formation of pterygium (a layer) on the surface of the eye, cataract, and other ocular/eye problems. The dry air and direct exposure to air conditioners can also result in dry eyes. Hence, taking appropriate precautions during summer can help you prevent eye problems. If you experience redness or itchiness in the eyes, don’t take over-the-counter medications and consult an ophthalmologist immediately.” If a person is vulnerable to eye allergy, they should visit an ophthalmologist and begin on medicines in advance to help reduce discomfort during the season. The cases of allergic conjunctivitis increase in summer, particularly in children, and they experience itchiness, redness, watering and white rope-like discharge from eyes.

How to take care of your eyes during summer:

Avoid direct exposure to sunlight:

· Avoid direct exposure to sunlight unless essential, especially during peak time of heat i.e. 10am to 2pm when the UV rays are at their strongest.

· Use appropriate sunglasses which block UV rays: One should not get fooled by the color or the cost of the lenses but look for a certificate that states that the lenses can block at least 98% of UV rays. Ideally, these glasses should wrap all around the eyes so that the sunlight does not reach the eyes from the sides.

· Using a hat or an umbrella when outdoors prevents direct exposure of the eyes to sunlight.

Maintain good hygiene:

· Maintain good personal hygiene and wash your hands frequently.

· Avoid rubbing your eyes.

· Frequent cleaning of the eyes with clean cold water will wash away the dust particles and allergens that cause itching.

· Avoid sharing handkerchiefs, towels, napkins, bed sheets, pillow covers etc.

· Avoid going to crowded places and dusty environments.

Take adequate precautions while going for swimming:

· It’s fun to swim during summer but ensure that you wear protective glasses. Also be sure of the cleanliness and appropriate level of chlorination of water.

Other precautions:

· Keeping a cold compress on closed eyelids: A cooler temperature helps reduce itching by making chemical mediators that cause itching become less effective.

· Instillation of artificial lubricating eye drops and avoiding direct exposure to air conditioning, etc., help reduce the discomfort for those who experience dry eyes.

Bhanudeep, Sr. Consultant Paediatric Neurologist & Dr Sharmila P, Sr. Consultant Paediatrician and Neonatologist; at the Autism Awareness program 2023, for the parents of children with ASD, hosted by Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad; today at Apollo Hospitals, Jubilee Hills.

Hyderabad, May 2023: Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad hosted the Autism Awareness Program 2023 for the parents of children with ASD, as part of Autism Awareness month, today. A group of medical specialists comprising of Paediatrician, Early Interventionist, Paediatric Neurologist, Psychiatrist, Paediatric Dentist; provided tips to parents, to handle different challenges that arise while grooming these children. The unique awareness program equipped the parents with tips and guidelines to manage their child at home. The Program was inaugurated by Dr A. Ravinder Babu, Director of Medical Services, Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad. The faculty comprised of Dr A. Jagadish, HOD, Developmental Health clinic, Apollo Hospitals and organizer and moderator of this Program; Dr P. Sharmila, Dr Bhanudeep, Dr Krishna Sahithi and Dr Manisha.

Autism or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a Neuro developmental disorder that affects social interaction, communication, and social behaviour. It is called a spectrum disorder because it varies widely in severity and symptoms in developmental domains from person to person, explains Dr A Jagadish, HOD, Developmental Health Clinic, Apollo Hospitals.

Speaking on the occasion Dr A. Ravinder Babu said, Autism is a common disorder, one in every hundred children show some kind of autistic features, in our country. Approximately 18 mn., people are suspected to be suffering from this problem in India. Generally parents recognise this problem at the age of 3 to 4 years around the time the child begins to talk, that’s a very late presentation. In fact the autistic children show the features at an early age of less than one year, that is the time when the parents should recognise it and seek immediate medical intervention. Early intervention is the key to complete cure and treatment. Unfortunately due to social stigma attached to autism, parents tend to not to accept the fact and continue to be in the presumption of delayed growth. In the process they postpone until the problem becomes obvious. Need to appreciate the Government for becoming sensitive to the problems autistic kids face in school admissions, schools can no more deny admission to a child with any disorder. At Apollo Hospitals, we have a very strong paediatric team, a strong paediatric neuro department and we screen children for a spectrum of disorders a child could be suffering from and customise the treatment to the needs of that particular child. The main idea is to get these children into the mainstream and ensure they lead a normal childhood. The best part is, these children have good IQ, in fact they perform exceedingly well, it’s just that how we channelise the things and get things better for the child, is what matters .

According to estimates, approximately 18 million people suffer from autism in India. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), ASD, or autism, affects approximately 1 in every 100 children. Experts are of the opinion that the condition can be significantly improved with Early detection and Early Intervention, India still has limited resources and facilities for those suffering with ASD. Most children with ASD are usually screened in their developing years. Early intervention plays an extremely significant and crucial role in improving a child’s verbal and social development.

Most parents tend to seek medical help only when the child reaches the age of 3 or 4 years and their speech starts to develop. But early red flags or signs of autism can be detected when they are a one year old. Most children in the spectrum do not respond to physical or verbal cues. Some also indulge in repetitive stereotypic behaviour. These are signs that parents can easily pick up, says Dr A Jagadish.

Autism is more common in boys than girls, with a ratio of 4:1. The usual behaviour of a child with ASD is, he being lost in his own world and show no interest in the surrounding environment. Exhibits certain repetitive behaviour like toe walking, taking interest in revolving objects, aversion or liking towards peculiar sounds like noise of pressure cooker, the noise of washing machine etc. The behaviours include inconsistent eye contact, no response to name but instant response to the sound of their choice, no pointing towards an object, no joint attention. The child may recognise and speak alphabets, numbers, colours, etc., but does not speak contextual social words. His vocabulary is maximally limited to need-based words or no contextual words.

Some of the children with autism are brilliant and exceptional, they exhibit performance which is sometimes far superior to the ones who are not ASD. Such children could be inducted into normal mainstream with early intervention program. Taking care of a child with autism requires awareness, patience, understanding, and family, community and social support, says Dr A Jagadish.

Paediatricians can screen the child with screening tools like M-CHAT for developmental red flags or any developmental deviations, when they come for vaccination or well-baby clinic and can refer for Early Intervention Therapy.

Dr A. Jagadish, Neonatal & Paediatric Early Interventionist recommends that parents should not expose their children below 5 years of age to electronic Gadgets, as they may cause Regression of children’s speech, cognitive, social and sensory development.

Škoda Auto Volkswagen India Launches its First-Ever Student Car Project in India

Škoda Auto Volkswagen India Launches its First-Ever Student Car Project in India

Mumbai/Pune, 01 May 2023: Škoda Auto Volkswagen India Private Limited (SAVWIPL), which manages the Indian region of five Volkswagen Group brands – Škoda, Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, and Lamborghini, has announced its first-ever student car project in India. Selected students from the Group Academy’s Dual Vocational Training in Mechatronics program have created a unique cabriolet version of the Škoda Rapid sedan. This project offers students a hands-on experience in the automotive industry, allowing them to apply their theoretical knowledge in a practical setting.

Piyush Arora, Managing Director and CEO of Škoda Auto Volkswagen India Private Limited said, “We are excited to introduce the Student Car project to India, providing vocational school pupils with a unique opportunity to design and create their dream car by rebuilding one of the cars from the Škoda portfolio while adding innovative ideas. This initiative reflects our commitment to nurturing talent and promoting innovation in the Indian automotive industry. Such initiatives also create an opportunity for the realisation of futuristic ideas by building prototypes with out-of-box thinking without the fear of failure. We are confident that this project will not only give students practical experience but also equip them with new skills and insights into various departments at Škoda Auto Volkswagen India. By stimulating the youth’s creativity and providing them with practical skills, this project will further support the Skill India initiative implemented by the Indian Government.”

Sarma Chillara, Group Head of HR and Administration Škoda Auto Volkswagen India Private Limited said, “As the automotive industry continues to evolve, Škoda Auto Volkswagen India firmly believes that grooming the next generation of skilled professionals to adapt to this dynamic landscape is imperative. With a focus on practical learning and skill-building, our mechatronics program is tailored to empower students with the tools and expertise needed to thrive in the fast-paced automotive industry. It brings us great pleasure to witness our students collaborating on such a prestigious project.”

The mechatronics students undertook a unique car project and converted a Škoda Rapid into a cabriolet. Converting a standard, hard-top car into roofless beauty was not an easy job, but the students were determined and ensured to complete the project on time and with an immaculate finish. Among the various customizations, the one that really draws attention is the retractable Škoda badge on the bonnet. The iconic ‘winged arrow’ hood ornament elevates elegantly from the bonnet and retracts back in at a touch of a button. They also added a sleek LED lip lighting to the front bonnet to enhance the sporty appearance. In addition, the project car also gets an illuminated ‘Skoda’ inscription on the bootlid to give it a distinct appearance. There are several other sporty bits like the fully-loaded black accessories package with a yellow catch radium flow character line and yellow-painted brake calipers.

To give the cabin a more premium feel the students upgraded the standard radio to a more modern, tablet-style touchscreen infotainment system. But more importantly, they had to integrate the seatbelt into the front seat since the cabriolet doesn’t have a B-pillar where the belts are originally mounted. The seats themselves are beautifully crafted in top-quality scarlet-red leather. And to ensure an exhilarating experience, the factory-fitted exhaust was replaced by a sporty exhaust system that can induce goosebumps at a blip of the throttle.

Though this is the first Student Car Project by Škoda Auto Volkswagen India, internationally, the Škoda Academy’s Azubi Student Car Project is now in its ninth iteration. The Škoda vocational students in Mladá Boleslav have been designing and building their dream car since 2014. With exceptional one-of-a-kind vehicles, the Group in India aims to showcase its Vocational School’s high level of training and support the nation’s Skill India initiative. The program not only showcases the exceptional abilities of Indian engineers but also validates the Group’s commitment to empowering the next generation of skilled professionals.

SAVWIPL Academy is taking steps to regularize the Student Car Program and include it as a project in the students’ syllabus. The program will involve one cycle of projects every year, and the student selection criteria will be improved to make it more competitive. Through this initiative, the Academy aims to create a centralized forum/platform for the plant where students can showcase and implement innovative and futuristic ideas. The program will provide students with a unique opportunity to develop their skills and contribute to the Academy’s growth while gaining practical experience in the field.

SAVWIPL Academy’s Dual Vocational Training in Mechatronics is a flagship program that has been contributing to upskilling 10th-grade school students since 2011. This full-time 3.5-year course, adopted from Germany, focuses on developing school-leavers’ talents to take up critical roles. The program’s objective is to encourage technological creativity among apprentices, inculcate a sense of pride in their talent, and promote a problem-solving approach to developing appropriate technologies. Apprentices get a chance to apply what they learn in the classroom practically, promoting creativity, and showcasing their talents. The program is also a good platform to find talented individuals and boosts apprentices’ confidence in speaking and presenting their work.

The Naadam Naatyam YouTube Channel aims to showcase traditional Indian music and dance forms to a wider audience and promote the rich cultural heritage of India. The Aalwar Vaibhavam video album features devotional music composed by Sri Ushakant and performed by the students and faculty of Mahati Music Academy.

The Aalwars, who lived between the 6th and 9th centuries CE, were poet-saints from Tamil Nadu, South India. They are highly regarded for their devotional poetry that exalts Lord Vishnu, and their literary works constitute a significant portion of Nalayira Divya Prabandham. They belonged to different castes. Aandal alias “Godai” was the only female amongst the twelve. Bhagavat Ramanuja had also mentioned about these “Aalwars” during his time. “Aalwar Vaibhavam” refers to the splendour and grandeur of the Aalwars and their devotional poetry, which is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The lyrics of “Aalwar Vaibhavam” are penned by Dr Tirumala Srinivasacharya, music is composed by Sri Ushakanth and songs are rendered by Dr J. Sreekanth.

Sri J. Rameswara Rao speaking on the occasion said, despite their busy schedules Sri Ushakant garu and Dr Sreekanth continue to dedicate and devote themselves and their entire family to our rich traditions and the melodious classical music. The launch of the YouTube Channel Naadam Naatyam and release of the video album Aalwar Vaibhavam, is their contribution to the continuation of this rich tradition for the benefit of future generations. Being a disciple of Chinna Jeeyar Swami, I greatly cherish the Aalwars devotional poetry and appreciate the efforts of Sri Ushakant garu and Dr Sreekanth in this direction.

Sri C. Sriniraju said, I am an admirer of Indian culture and traditions, appreciate the initiative of Dr Sreekanth to continue these traditions.

I am happy that he created a platform not only for our generation to be enthralled with, but for the future generations and that is something which is his way of giving back to the society and our culture.

The founder of Mahati, Sri Ushakanth was inspired by the ‘Statue of Equality’ conceptualized by HH Tridandi Ramanuja Chinnajeeyar Swamy. He took a leaf from it and desired to make a humble contribution in the form of Aalwar Vaibhavam. Though the idea sprouted in 2017, due to some personal loss and COVID, completion took more time. “We are delighted to see the fruition of the idea and many talented professionals who are behind the success of this album.”, said Dr J. Sreekanth.

Mahati Music Academy is a leading music institution in Hyderabad that offers training in vocal and instrumental music, as well as dance and arts. Doctors at Apollo Hospitals perform challenging 8-hour cardiac surgery to save woman

Ahmedabad, May 1st, 2023: A team of doctors at Apollo Hospitals, Ahmedabad, led by Dr Utpal Shah, Senior Consultant, Cardiothoracic Surgeon, performed a life-threatening triple valve replacement on a 48-year-old woman. The high-risk surgery involved a redo mitral valve replacement, a redo tricuspid valve replacement, and an aortic valve replacement. Redo valve replacement surgeries are extremely challenging since they often pose a higher risk to the patient’s life during and post-surgery.

The 48-year-old patient first got a mitral valve replacement and tricuspid valve repair surgery done 21 years back. She first consulted doctors at Apollo Hospitals in 2021, with complaints of excessive fatigue, swelling in her legs & face, and ascites. The experts ran certain diagnostic tests which were all indicative of issues in the tricuspid valve and severely dysfunctional prosthetic mitral valve function and moderate aortic valve disease. Based on the patient’s health condition, Dr Shah suggested a redo triple valve replacement.

At first, the patient was hesitant due to the high risk involved in the surgery, but after two years when her condition began to deteriorate, she was convinced and agreed to undergo the surgery. After the patient agreed for the surgery, the doctors again ran a few tests to ascertain her condition and found a blockage in the patient’s aortic valve too. A team led by Dr Utpal Shah, Senior Consultant, Cardiothoracic Surgeon Apollo Hospitals, Ahmedabad, performed the 8-hour-long triple valve replacement surgery.

Dr Shah, said, “There was 25-35% risk to the patient’s life. Triple valve replacement surgery is an extremely rare and complex medical procedure. It is even more challenging in cases when metal valves need to be re-replaced. As per medical literature very few such surgeries are performed internationally.”

Following the surgery, the patient is currently recuperating and responding well to all the post-operative treatments at the hospital.
