Lupin Signs MoU with the Government of Rajasthan to strengthen Healthcare system

Jaipur, November 2022: Lupin Human Welfare and Research Foundation (LHWRF), the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) arm of Lupin Limited (‘Lupin’ BSE: 500257 |NSE: LUPIN | Reuters: LUPIN.BO |Bloomberg: LPCIN) announced today that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Rajasthan to address the prevalence of Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) in the Alwar district of Rajasthan.

The MoU was signed in the presence of Dr. K L Meena, Director Public Health, Department of Medical, Health and Family Welfare Government of Rajasthan and Tushara Shankar, Head – Corporate Social Responsibility, Lupin.

As per the MoU, LHWRF will work with the State’s Department of Health and Family Welfare for strengthening the healthcare system and addressing the prevalence of CVD and COPD for better outcomes. The collaboration will work towards serving the local communities in Alwar through preventive, curative and support-based solutions focused on curing the diseases in the short term and reducing their prevalence in the long term. The program is planned to be rolled out in a phase-wise manner.

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) contribute to nearly 5.87 million (60%) of all deaths in India. CVD and COPD are two leading causes but the prevalence rate of CVD and deaths due to COPD in Rajasthan both outpace national figures.

Rajasthan is also among the most affected states in terms of respiratory disease. These statistics prompted LHWRF to conduct a comprehensive situation analysis of select healthcare facilities approved by the Department of Medical Health Services (DMHS) in the region. The findings of the assessment were then presented to the DMHS for review on September 21, 2022. The department’s inputs and suggestions were incorporated in the final project proposal.

The findings of the analysis have helped co-create a program that would systematically address CVD and COPD in the region. Using an evidence-based approach to design support interventions, six key areas have been identified which include educating communities, capacity building, early screening, diagnosis & treatment, establishment of NCD corners at health centers, and a patient health tracking system.

“As a leading healthcare provider in India, Lupin has spearheaded the cause of enhancing access to high quality and affordable medicines and healthcare, including to marginalized and vulnerable populations. As we work with the state government to strengthen existing healthcare systems and programs, our goal is to improve availability, accessibility and utilization of healthcare services.” said Nilesh Gupta, Managing Director, Lupin.

The MoU is an initiative of LHWRF’s “Lives” program, which aims to improve healthcare access and quality of life for communities.

“We are registering an increase in CVD and COPD cases in Rajasthan. In order to manage these and other NCD diseases, we have signed an MoU with Lupin Foundation. They will work in selected blocks from Alwar district to fill gaps in awareness and health services by developing NCD corners and delivering services through their mobile diagnostic van,” said Dr. K L Meena, Director Public Health, Department of Medical, Health and Family Welfare Government of Rajasthan.

“In Alwar, CVD and COPD remain prevalent despite efforts to promote awareness of these NCDs. This collaboration with the State Government will help us improve health outcomes and reduce the burden of these two major diseases. As part of this program, CVD and COPD healthcare will be enhanced in the blocks of Alwar in a phased manner”, said Tushara Shankar, Head – Corporate Social Responsibility, Lupin.

Portable ECG Device saves lives in Kedarnath, reduces cardiac mortality rate by 99%

Bengaluru, November 25th, 2022: Sunfox Technologies, a health-tech startup focused on creating portable, affordable, and accessible med-tech devices for the future, has managed to impact the lives of pilgrims in Kedarnath by reducing the overall fatalities due to heart attacks within just 3 months. Sunfox’s screening camp screened nearly 1500 pilgrims of which 163 were identified with abnormalities and advised to either discontinue the trek or look at alternatives based on clinical assessment. This steeply reduced the deaths from 63 in a month to just 3.

Low oxygen levels and low temperatures at high altitudes lead to cardiac abnormalities that mostly go unchecked, resulting in an unprecedented number of deaths. With a record number of deaths due to heart-attacks in Kedarnath this year, the start-up in Dehradun, worked with the Uttarakhand government to set up a free three-bed screening camp at the starting point of the pilgrimage, near Sonprayag, in July 2022.

Concerning the achievement and overall impact on the industry, Founder and CEO of Sunfox Technologies, Mr. Rajat Jain said, “Cardiovascular diseases (heart attack and stroke) are the leading cause of death in India and worldwide. When it comes to cardiovascular mortalities in India, heart ailments caused more than 2.1 million deaths in 2015 at all ages, as per a study part of the Million Death Study project set up by the Registrar General of India (RGI) in collaboration with global health experts. Many of these deaths could have been prevented with timely diagnosis, especially if we had access to reliable point-of-care devices. Effective use of such technologies can make up for the limitations we often face in our country with respect to accessible healthcare and a competent workforce. The results from our work in Kedarnath have validated the efficacy of our technology, with true potential to transform our healthcare landscape and ensure cardiac health is in the hands of the people ”

Sunfox’s miracle device ‘Spandan’ is an easy-to-operate, matchbox-sized ECG device which can detect heart attacks and heart abnormalities on a smartphone. The design makes it usable both at homes as well as at local clinics and costs 20x less than a standard ECG machine. With a 99.7% accuracy rate, the device, through its Artificial Intelligence, detects 21 arrhythmia patterns, 12 heart dysfunctions, and 12 kinds of STEMI and ischemia. The device can be used at home for self-monitoring in the same way people use blood pressure monitors. Sunfox has created meaningful partnerships with Emcure, Healthians, and dozens of hospitals to take its impact to each corner of the world. (https://sunfox.in/)

The firm recently raised Rs. 1 crore at Shark Tank India from Namita Thapar (Executive Director, Emcure Pharmaceuticals), Peyush Bansal (Co-Founder, Chief Executive & People Officer of Lenskart), Vineeta Singh (Co-Founder and CEO of SUGAR cosmetics), Ghazal Alagh (Co-Founder and Chief Innovation Officer of Mamaearth) and Anupam Mittal (Founder of shaadi.com and avid angel investor). The team was one of the few contestants that bagged an “All Shark Deal” at the show.

“Kedarnath campaign by Sunfox is a small example of the immense life-saving potential of this breakthrough innovation ‘Spandan’. Emcure is proud to support Spandan for Kedarnath campaign and Sunfox has been one of my favourite startups from Shark Tank portfolio. I believe that they can become a meaningful part of the world’s efforts to achieve a significant leap to reduce the mortalities due to heart attacks.” says Namita Thapar, Executive Director, Emcure Pharmaceuticals and Shark Tank Judge.

Sunfox has grown rapidly after the deal, impacting 8000+ clinics across 2000+ Pincodes in the last few months. They have saved 2000+ lives in the past few months by commoditizing cardiac diagnostics. The firm has also received state government funding as a beneficiary of Startup India and got appreciated by the Hon’ble Prime Minister himself on National TV.

Beyond Rhetoric: Youth Leadership on Climate Action, Masterclass by Climate Asia

Delhi: Last weekend, Climate Asia conducted a masterclass on “Beyond Rhetoric: Youth Leadership on Climate Action” with Durlabh Ashok (World Economic Forum). The session underlined the understanding of climate change, low-carbon development, and global
warming, and special attention was drawn to unpacking COP27. It also covered the theme of Indonesia’s National Action Plan on Climate Change, Environment Policies and Agreements, and pertinent historical facts about climate change.

A briefing on the outcomes of COP27 preceded the session. It was emphasized that the conference was like the Paris Agreement as there was still no mention of fossil fuels. The silver lining, however, was the attention to the ‘loss and damage fund.’ Additionally, this year the UAE delegation agreed to include young people and children in the climate action, which was considered an important step for climate awareness and mitigation.

Following an overview of the 2023 summit, Ashok brought up another crucial area for discussion: the distinctions between climate change, low-carbon development, and global warming—a few terms that are frequently used interchangeably yet are very distinct from one another.

In order to make the discussion more engaging, he also posed questions to the audience about how they are contributing towards worsening climate change. Fast fashion, stubble burning, air travel, and other subjects were mentioned in the responses. Regarding fast fashion, he said how it takes 20,000 liters of water to make one pair of pants.

Additionally, he advised everyone to calculate their carbon footprint because it might help track individual contributions to climate action.

The history of Climate Summits was another significant focus of the session. Durlabh called attention to the important climate meetings, beginning with the 1992 Rio convention. In addition to the Paris Agreement, other significant climate treaties were highlighted, including the
COP15 in Copenhagen, which established the idea of common but differentiated responsibilities, and The Kyoto Protocol, which is the first and only binding treaty to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

As a case study, Durlabh used three nations—Australia, Indonesia, and Malaysia—to demonstrate each nation’s efforts to tackle climate change. In a relatively small country Indonesia, the idea of RANPI, also known as Yellowbook, is used to promote multi-sectoral coordination efforts.

The topic of greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and chlorofluorocarbons, was also touched upon. Extreme climatic trends, including sea level rise, high temperatures, and unusual rain, are now occurring more frequently than ever owing to the
overuse of these gases.

In a question regarding the technologies used for the removal of Carbon dioxide, Durlabh expressed his “love-hate relationship” with such technologies explaining how it can’t be a panacea to solving the problem. He instead emphasized the more accessible alternative, Forestation, which is not only low-cost but also climate-friendly.

The need to educate youth and children about climate change was mentioned as the session ended. Durlabh closed by saying, “We are in control of climate change; we are the problem, so cut down, reuse, recycle, walk and change.”

Climate Asia (www.climateasia.org) is a nonprofit dedicated to strengthening the climate ecosystem in Asia through the capacity building of organizations focusing on talent strategy, capacity building, and thought leadership.
