Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Shyam Singh Rana stated that farmers and soldiers are the two most vital pillars for any nation. He emphasized that even during prolonged wars, agriculture must not be halted. At present, the country’s food reserves are well-stocked, and there is no scarcity of essential grains.
Speaking as the chief guest on the second day of the three-day Agri-Tech Exhibition and Startup Conclave organized by the Naveen Jindal Foundation at Kurukshetra University’s auditorium on Saturday, the minister said that if Indian farmers adopt global techniques in agriculture, it can significantly improve the nation’s economy.
India Has the Most Fertile Land
Minister Rana noted that India is an agriculture-based country and among 100 acres of land chosen globally, India’s soil would be the most fertile. He added that Kurukshetra is historically significant as it is believed to be the place where Lord Brahma first initiated farming, making it a model for others to follow.
Emphasis on Promoting Natural Farming
Rana explained that farming is mainly of three types: chemical, organic, and natural. He stressed the urgent need to shift towards natural farming. The central and state governments are jointly implementing schemes aimed at increasing farmers’ income, reducing costs, saving time and water, and enhancing productivity through natural farming methods.
To encourage natural farming, the government has set a target of bringing one lakh acres of land under this practice. Subsidies are also being provided to farmers for each indigenous cow, as these cows are instrumental in low-cost, high-yield agriculture.
The minister stated that the milk and dung of indigenous cows are highly beneficial for organic farming. Cow dung is used to produce ‘Jeevamrit’ (a natural fertilizer), which acts as a bio-enhancer and contains antibiotic properties that help prevent diseases. He also informed that Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has launched several schemes for gaushalas (cow shelters) in the state.
Compensation for Fire-Damaged Crops
Rana further stated that the state government has already disbursed compensation to farmers whose wheat crops were damaged in recent fire incidents. Additionally, farmers cultivating green manure crops like dhaincha and moong are being offered subsidies. The government has advised that direct sowing of paddy can begin after May 15. Reports from farmers suggest a noticeable increase in crop yields compared to previous seasons.
Presence of Eminent Personalities
The event was attended by several dignitaries including MSP Committee Member Vinod Anand, Prof. Ramesh Sihmar, Vishal Vardhan, Randhir Singh, Gurnam Singh Chaduni, Rahul Dhingra, Rajkumar Saini, Padma Shri Bharat Bhushan Tyagi, Ravindra Sangwan, Ramesh Singh, Karmchand, and others.
