ITC Grand Chola Unveils the Majestic ‘Athangudi Christmas Tree’: A Fusion of Tradition and Artistry
ITC Grand Chola heralds the festive season with the grand unveiling of a singular artistic marvel — an Athangudi Christmas Tree.
This year our tree, inspired by the vibrant Athangudi tiles of Chettinad is a tribute to the rich heritage of local art and culture. The intricate tile patterns have been recreated on repurposed wood by people of determination, in collaboration with Rahool Saksena, an artist of change. This initiative showcases the enduring beauty of traditional craftsmanship while underscoring our commitment to Responsible Luxury.
Each tile, steeped in a 500-year-old tradition, reflects the vibrant artistic legacy of the Chettinad region. Once gracing the resplendent halls of Tamil Nadu’s ancestral palaces, these tiles now find new expression, seamlessly bridging the timeless and the contemporary.
Speaking on the occasion, Shaariq Akhtar General Manager of ITC Grand Chola, remarked, “The Athangudi Christmas Tree is a tangible manifestation of ITC Grand Chola’s commitment to fostering an equilibrium between indulgent luxury, environmental stewardship, and patronage of local artisans. It is a celebration of India’s cultural lineage and an invocation to preserve and elevate artisanal traditions through meaningful platforms.”
The ceremonial lighting of the tree illuminated more than just the festive ambiance — the dazzling hues and intricate designs of the Athangudi tiles, enhanced by a cascade of warm lights, resonated deeply with the ethos of ITC Grand Chola: to honour the past while embracing a sustainable future
The installation will be on display throughout the holiday season (and repurposed later, maintaining the cycle of sustainability), inviting all to witness this sublime tribute to Tamil Nadu’s artisanal legacy and the timeless spirit of Christmas.
