Cairn Engages Over 500 Youth in Mental Health Awareness Session in Assam

Guwahati, August 13, 2025: In pursuit of a more holistic approach to health—where mental and social wellness are valued alongside physical fitness, Cairn Oil & Gas, part of Vedanta group, organised a Mental Health Awareness Session at Sarupathar College, Assam, on International Youth Day. The highly interactive session engaged more than 500 youth on emotional well-being, resilience, and stress management.

The session was conducted by the distinguished expert in clinical psychology, Dr. Shubhangi Bhagawati, an active member of the American Psychological Association. During the event, Dr. Bhagawati emphasised on the importance of early recognition of mental health challenges, practical techniques for managing academic pressure, and the role of self-awareness in making informed life decisions.

Students participated in guided exercises to improve focus and reduce stress and were encouraged to seek support and engage in open dialogue.

“I never realized how much stress I was carrying until this session,” commented a second-year student at Sarupathar College. “Dr. Bhagawati’s talk helped me understand that it’s okay to ask for help and that mental health is something we should talk about openly. I feel more confident and supported now.”

Often referred to as the country’s “demographic dividend”, India has the largest youth population in the world with about 65% of its people under the age of 35*. This presents a window of opportunity for their significant contribution in nation’s progress provided, there is sustained investment in youth development. Cairn’s initiative reinforces the need for emotional well-being alongside education and healthcare.

A Cairn Oil & Gas spokesperson said, “We believe that mental health is just as vital as physical health. Our goal was to create a safe and supportive space for young people to learn, share, and build emotional resilience. This initiative is part of our long-standing commitment to the holistic well-being and development of communities in the North East, especially Assam.”

The session concluded with a lively Q&A, where students shared personal stories, experiences and sought guidance, highlighting the importance of stigma-free conversations around mental health.

Cairn continues to support communities in Assam through CSR programmes, through a range of CSR activities in healthcare, education, skill development, and community welfare.
