As India marks its 78th Independence Day, the nation reflects on its journey of freedom, progress, and sustainability. This day is not only a reminder of the sacrifices made by our forefathers but also an opportunity to contribute to the ongoing efforts towards building a better and greener future. In line with this spirit, Marengo Asia Hospitals Gurugram took a significant step by organizing a Tree Plantation Drive at Suraj School in Gurugram. This initiative is part of a larger campaign to increase the green cover in schools and communities across the city.

The act of planting trees symbolizes growth, hope, and the nurturing of life—values that resonate deeply with the ideals of Independence Day. By launching this initiative, Marengo Asia Hospitals Gurugram emphasizes the importance of environmental stewardship as a crucial aspect of modern-day patriotism. The Tree Plantation Drive at Suraj School was a community-centered event, witnessing more than 200 students, teachers, hospital staff, and residents. The aim was not only to plant trees but also to instill a sense of responsibility and awareness about environmental conservation among the younger generation.

Dr. Saurabh Lall, Facility Director, Marengo Asia Hospitals Gurugram, said, “As healthcare professionals, we understand the significant impact the environment has on public health. Trees are vital for maintaining ecological balance, providing clean air, regulating temperatures, and even enhancing mental well-being. Through this tree plantation drive, we are not just planting trees; we are planting the seeds of a healthier future. Our collective actions today can help mitigate the effects of climate change, ensuring a more stable and liveable environment for future generations. This initiative reflects our commitment to fostering a healthier and more sustainable world. Together with our partners, we can cultivate a greener, cleaner, and healthier planet for ourselves and our children.”

Ms. Kanika Ghai, Expert in child education & psychology in Suraj School, Sector-56 Gurugram expressed her appreciation for the initiative and said “We are delighted to collaborate with Marengo Asia Hospitals for this Tree Plantation Drive. Our students must learn the value of trees and their role in sustaining life on Earth. This drive not only beautifies our school but also provides an invaluable lesson in environmental stewardship. We hope to see our students carry this message forward and continue contributing to a greener world.”

The Tree Plantation Drive is a collaborative effort planned to be conducted in various phases by inviting residential societies and schools across Gurugram to partner and contribute to this impactful drive. The Marengo Asia Hospitals Gurugram will source the saplings and plant them on the premises of the societies and schools. The societies and schools participating will take care of maintaining the plants and the hospital will replace any plant that does not survive. The tree plantation drive is aimed at encouraging responsibility in the younger population in schools and conferring a sense of duty in them. This initiative is expected to be replicated in Faridabad as well, further extending the green cover and promoting environmental awareness among more communities.

The Commission for Air Quality Management in NCR and Adjoining Areas (CAQM) has raised the tree plantation target for the National Capital Region (NCR) by 20 per cent to 45 million trees for the financial year 2024-2025. Yogyata Samaj Kalyan Sewa Samiti aims to plant one million native trees across India annually. Volunteers, farmers, NGOs, schoolchildren, and the public participate in mass planting during monsoon and winter seasons, ensuring efficient monitoring and nourishment for high survival rates. Over the last 5 biennial assessments, the tree cover of the country has shown an increasing trend. The tree cover has risen from 90,844 sq km in 2011 to 95,748 sq km as per the 2021 assessment, showing a decadal increase of 4,904 sq km.
