After 73 nail-biting contests and high-adrenaline games, TATA IPL 2023 has reached its crescendo as we have got the two finallists in Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans.

Interestingly, it will be a repeat of the opening game of TATA IPL 2023 where defending champions Gujarat Titans hosted four-time champions Chennai Super Kings in their backyard amid much fanfare at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium.

Gujarat Titans – who were a team to beat from the start of the tournament – suffered a defeat in Qualifier 1 against CSK. In Qualifier 2 GT faced a resurgent Mumbai Indians but young Shubman Gill’s sublime century – third of the season – and Mohit Sharma’s five-wicket haul propelled the holders to an emphatic victory.

Gill’s knock of 129 off 60 balls against MI will go down as one of the best centuries in the history of the competition. Former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar hailed the young India batter for his superlative effort in a high-pressure game.

Speaking on Star Sports Studio, Sunil Gavaskar said, “This innings of Gill will be remembered for years. In this knock, Gill forced opposition captain Rohit Sharma to change his strategy by targeting MI’s main bowlers. During these matchless innings, Gill kept his strike rate consistently good and kept his team free from pressure. Along with this, this innings will also be remembered for Gill’s ability to play cricketing shots in the T20 format.”

Former India cricketer Harbhajan Singh also lauded the immensely talented youngster from Punjab for keeping his basics right and his clarity of thoughts at such a young age.

Speaking on Star Sports’ Cricket Live, Harbhajan Singh said, “Shubman Gill’s batting proves one thing that if your basics are right, and your thinking is clear, then runs will automatically flow out of your bat. The batting of Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill has proven that you don’t need to hit oblique shots to score runs. These two are representing different generations but their bats have yielded a lot of runs and all this has been possible due to clear thinking and sticking to the basics of cricket.”

Former India cricketer Irfan Pathan claimed this knock against Mumbai Indians will be remembered as one of the iconic innings in TATA IPL Playoffs history.

Speaking on Star Sports Cricket Live, Irfan Pathan said, “Years later when you’ll look back, you will remember this knock. If you look at the history of TATA IPL qualifier matches, you will hold this knock from Gill in high regard. It was completely different from what we have witnessed in the knockout stages of TATA IPL. The way Gill groomed this knock and the way he targeted MI’s main bowlers is commendable.”

Former India cricketer Mohammed Kaif claimed the TATA IPL 2023 season came a full circle with GT facing CSK in the last game of the tournament.

Speaking on Star Sports’ Cricket Live, Md Kaif said, “It has been one-all between CSK and GT in this season. The IPL 2023 has come full circle as CSK and GT featured in the first match of the competition. The match was played at this very ground where GT won, and later CSK returned the favour when GT went to Chennai by defeating Gujarat by a big margin in Qualifier 1. So, the final is going to be a heavily-contested one.”

Former India cricketer Harbhajan Singh stated the only thing that stands between Gujarat Titans and their second successive IPL trophy is MS Dhoni.

Speaking on Star Sports Studio, Harbhajan Singh said, “CSK is a successful team and surprisingly has played with the same team. This team has reached the finals the most number of times because each of its players believes in the ability of each of their partners. Part of the reason is that its captain believes in his teammates and is one of the most shrewd cricketing minds in the world – his name is Mahendra Singh Dhoni.”

Former India cricketer Irfan Pathan opined Gujarat Titans have a very solid and well-rounded bowling attack but MS Dhoni’s presence in the CSK dressing room will keep CSK in contention and the crowd being divided despite Gujarat Titans going to play on their home ground.

Speaking on Star Sports’ Cricket Live, Irfan Pathan said, “Quality wise Gujarat Titans are much ahead in the bowling department than CSK. In terms of man-to-man marking, Gujarat Titans are ahead. But it will be an emotional match between CSK and GT. I am a Gujarati and will want GT to win, but my feelings are inclined towards MS Dhoni. There’s still no clarity on whether he’ll play next year. Because of the Dhoni factor, the heart is backing CSK.”

Myna Mahila Breaks the Shackles of Period Stigma, Once Again

Myna Mahila Breaks the Shackles of Period Stigma, Once Again

Pad Parade, one of the highlight events of the year at Myna Foundation was conducted on the day of Menstrual Hygiene Day on Sunday, 28th May, 2023. The event in Khar and Govandi mustered about 183 people including women, men and children of different age groups, who carried slogans and posters in hindi and english, some including, “Mansik chakra se na raho anjaan, karo stri shakti par abhimaan” or “ Rather than being oblivious to the period cycle be proud to be a woman” and “Make periods table talk”. All present raised their voices in a singular and resounding protest to demand change and make a difference.

This year we were sponsored by Zixa, who have launched a new product for alleviating menstrual pain, Zixa Strong- Feminine Cramp Relief Roll On. Zixa also organised a game to burst balloons in order to burst common myths about menstruation, such as ‘periods don’t hurt’ and ‘one should be ashamed about their bodies and periods. We were also supported by Chaya Pawar of the Nirbhaya Patak team, Constable Patil, Sheela Gavkar- the area volunteer and Abhimanyu Sir- incharge of the Sai Baba Temple. They helped greatly in making this event a success.

Through this parade, we at Myna encourage that periods are a point of pride and not a point of shame. Every year this parade is held to bust myths regarding periods and make it a normal conversation by aiming to challenge taboos, demand access to menstrual products, promote menstrual health education, and empower women to embrace their bodies in the urban slums of the city by making it interactive and fun.

On the other hand, the other event was conducted in the middle of a community in the closed space of one of the slum pockets of Jawaharnagar of Khar East area. Women and girls of all ages participated in this event and they learnt and enjoyed at each of the stalls about the process of menstruation, maintaining hygiene during periods through fun activities. For the beneficiaries, menstrual health and hygiene stalls were set up. These included stations for menstrual hygiene, hand hygiene, nutrition, myth-busting games, and a selfie station. These stations provided information on the biology of periods, proper hygiene practices, where to dispose of menstrual products, and myth-busting activities. This event served as a great mechanism to create awareness on menstruation and personal hygiene among the community of girls and women. Both events helped gain awareness among women of the slums to gain a new perspective and educate themselves.

Pearson, logo

May 29, 2023, Bangalore/Mumbai – Pearson, the world’s leading learning company, has today received approval from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for PTE Academic to be accepted for all SDS (Student Direct Stream) applications.

PTE Academic will be accepted by the IRCC for SDS applications as of August 10, 2023.

This approval follows IRCC’s recognition earlier this year of PTE Core for proof of English language proficiency for Canadian permanent residency or citizenship.

SDS is an expedited study permit process for students applying to study in Canada from Antigua and Barbuda, Brazil, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, India, Morocco, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Senegal, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, and Vietnam.

Latest IRCC figures for 2022 show Canada reached an all-time high for international students. As of the end of October, IRCC had processed more than 750,300 study permit applications during the 2022 calendar year.

The UK, Australian, and New Zealand governments already accept PTE Academic for all visa applications. PTE Academic is also accepted by thousands of universities across Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, the UK, and the USA. PTE can be taken at more than 400 PTE centers in 118 countries.

Andy Bird, CEO, of Pearson, said: “Canada is a great place to be a student – fantastic colleges, beautiful scenery, exciting culture, and nightlife. With PTE Academic now recognised for SDS purposes, I’m delighted that Pearson can help even more test takers achieve their dream of studying there”.

“This recognition comes hot on the heels of PTE Core being approved for Canadian economic migration purposes earlier this year and reflects our determination to make PTE the test of choice for everybody wanting to live, work or study abroad.”

PTE brings together human expertise and the latest AI technology to deliver an English language proficiency test that is both impartial and highly accurate. AI technology is used for scoring and biometric data collection provides enhanced security measures. PTE is delivered through Pearson VUE, the computer-based testing business of Pearson.

Furthermore, test takers can book online up to 24 hours in advance, take advantage of year-round worldwide test centre slots and receive their results on average within 1.3 days.

PTE Academic tests taken before August 10 will be eligible for SDS provided they are submitted after this date and are within the expiry period stipulated by IRCC. Applicants are advised to check IRCC guidance.

Amitabh Bachchan partners with GSK for shingles awareness and prevention

National, 29th May 2023: GSK today announced a partnership with veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan to raise awareness about shingles, a painful condition that affects 1 out of 3 adults above the age of 50 years[i].

The campaign film evocatively captures the agonising pain caused by shingles and its debilitating impact on the people living with it. It gives an important message that it is possible to protect ageing adults against this pain through vaccination.

Commthus,ng on the partnership, Mr. Amitabh Bachchan said, “Shingles is known to be painful and thus certainly a setback to senior citizens. For prevention against Shingles, I recommend the Senior Citizens to talk to their doctors.”

Shingles is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. The virus remains inactive in the body after a person recovers from it. When the immunity of the body weakens, it re-activates to cause shingles. More than 90% of Indians by the age of 50 years have this virus in their body and are vulnerable to shingles[ii].

Dr Rashmi Hegde, Medical Director, GSK, said, “Amitabh Bachchan has been the face of several disease and vaccination awareness campaigns before, and his support has motivated people to take the required action to prevent these diseases. Today, India’s aging population is rising, and we need to make them aware of diseases such as shingles which can impact their quality of life. We believe this will persuade more people to talk to their doctors about protecting themselves or their loved ones from shingles.”

The film has been conceptualised and executed by Lowe Lintas. The creative focus is on capturing the intensity of the shingles pain through powerful metaphors and images. The representation of pain is based on scientifically documented patient testimonies.

Commenting on the creative insight for the film, Sagar Kapoor, Chief Creative Officer (Global Brands), Lowe Lintas said “Our challenge was to find a way to ‘show’ the unbearable pain of shingles, a sensation that can only be ‘felt’. That is why we have made use of imagery such as sharp nails piercing the body or a person getting electric shocks. We do not want to scare people, but we want to make them aware that Shingles can be extremely painful, and it can be prevented.”
