Joy Goswami: American Indian ‘Probashi’ Exhibits Exceptional Passion for Bengali Music

In speaking with Joy Goswami and listening to his impeccable Bangla songs in his deep and melodious voice, one can hardly believe that Joy has really, never lived in Bengal.

Born in New Delhi (where his Grandfather had migrated back in the 1930’s), and living in the United States for over two decades now, Joy fits the ideal definition of being a ‘Probashi Bengali’. Professionally, Joy has a background in Business and Patent Law, and works at the University of Delaware where he teaches, and directs the Technology Transfer office.

His passion for the Bengali language, affection for music and love for his beloved fans, compels him to visit Kolkata every so often from the US. While in Kolkata, Joy engages in recording music albums, performing on TV and conducting live musical shows for his audience.

During 2019-20, Joy has recorded a series of music albums from the Bengali Adhunik genre, in collaboration with some of the premier music production companies, and leading music arrangers, directors and lyricists from Kolkata.

Joy stepped into the music world as a young artist from Delhi with regular performances in All India Radio and Doordarshan. He has received numerous awards and accolades in India, Canada and the US while participating in more than 150 stage performances at national and international venues. His performances on TV in Kolkata include Channels such as: Tara Music, Rupashi Bangla, RPlus, Orange TV and Akash Aath.

Joy and his wife, Rubella, who is also a proclaimed dancer and anchor, are the founders of a US cultural group,

Nobina, established in 2014, popularizing Indian Music & Dance in North America. During this pandemic, while the world was practically locked down, Joy & Rubella made it their priority to use music for inspiring their audience and helping organizations in need, raise funds through their novel musical programs across the world. They hosted a series of interactive musical show on virtual platforms for their audiences, presenting more than 500 songs from various genres of music, including Rabindrasangeet, Nazrul Geeti, Shyama Sangeet, Adhunik Bengali, Bengali Films and Hindi.

Funds raised from their programs supported: Covid, Amphan, Musician’s relief funds, as well as cultural and educational initiatives in Kolkata.

Once the current Covid crisis ends, Joy has plans to embark on his journey of playback singing for the Bengali film industry, where he currently has several proposals on hand. His aspiration is also to embark on a series of musical live shows in Europe and Australia for his music lovers, to allow them enjoy and relive the glory of Bengali music from the golden era to the present times!
