TDI International School, Kundli organises a Legal Awareness Campaign for Acid Attack Survivors

Sonipat: TDI International School, Kundli, organised a legal awareness campaign for the survivors of acid attacks. It was done under the aegis of District Legal Services Authority, Sonipat, and the guidance of Hon’ble CJM and Secretary Ramesh Chandra, Legal Services Scheme 2016. The campaign was a part of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ celebrations to create awareness regarding sexual abuse and its prevention by educating students on Lok Adalat and Fundamental Rights and Fundamental Duties. Deepak Kumar, a legal servant and National Awardee from District Legal Services Authority, also marked his presence as the chief guest, and the program was presided over by Mr. Harender Kumar Sharma, Principal, TDI International School.

Keynote speaker Deepak Kumar said that under Section 326A of the IPC, if a person intentionally throws acid on someone and causes permanent damage, then this offence is non-bailable. The culprit can be punished with imprisonment of not less than 10 years or with life imprisonment. An appropriate fine is also imposed on the guilty, and the amount is given to the victim as financial support.

To prevent acid attacks, strict laws have been framed to regulate the sale of acid. For the treatment and rehabilitation of the victims of the attack, the National Legal Services Authority has made a provision of compensation of up to Rs 7 lakh. As per the guidelines of the Supreme Court, the shopkeeper selling the acid bottle will have to maintain a register in which the full name and address of the buyer, along with the purpose for buying the acid, has to be recorded. These registers shall be scrutinised by the Magistrate to ensure regularity in practice. The information about the stock of acid in the shops will also have to be given to the local administration. Acid shall not be sold to any person who is below 18 years of age. It is necessary to take a copy of the photo ID of the acid buyer.

Strict laws should be made for the safety of women. Prof. S.
